Is the JR Pass Worth It in 2026? Check Your Own Trip in One Minute
For most first trips to Japan, no. Since the price rise in October 2023, a 7-day pass costs ¥50,000, while the classic Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka loop costs about ¥29,500 in regular tickets. The pass still wins on long routes such as Hiroshima, Kanazawa or northern Japan, especially if you pack them into one week.
Add your own trips below. We rebuilt the fare table from JR's official fare pages on 6 November 2026, after JR's March 2026 fare rise, including the extra fee pass holders pay for the fastest trains, which most calculators leave out.

Why the pass stopped being an easy yes
Until 2023, the 7-day pass cost ¥29,650 from agencies and paid for itself with one return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto. In October 2023 it rose to ¥50,000. At the same time, JR let pass holders ride the fastest Nozomi trains, but only for an extra fee on every ride.
It's still moving: since October 2026, agencies charge ¥53,000 (JR's own site keeps ¥50,000 for now), and the Nozomi fees rise for tickets bought from July 2027.
So the old advice, "just get the JR Pass", is now wrong for most people. You need to add up your actual trips, which is what the calculator above does.
On 6 November 2026 we checked every fare in the calculator against JR's official pages. Four had changed with JR East's fare rise in March 2026, and the Nozomi fee to Hiroshima was higher than most guides say. Tokyo–Kanazawa and Tokyo–Sendai are added up from JR's fare and fee tables, as no page prints the total.
When does the pass still pay off?
Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo, 7 days
Skip the pass. Book each Shinkansen separately and save about ¥30,000.
Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Tokyo, 7 days
Close, but still no, unless you add day trips such as Miyajima or Himeji.
Tokyo → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Tokyo
Get the pass. It pays off, and 〈the airport train should be covered too〉.

If most of your trip is in one region, a regional pass usually beats the national one by a wide margin.
Kansai Area Pass (smartphone)
The paper pass ended in September 2026. The new smartphone version is sold only through overseas agencies. Good for day trips around Kansai.
Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass
Shinkansen from Osaka to Hiroshima and the Miyajima ferry. Osaka and Hiroshima without Tokyo.
JR EAST PASS
Replaced the Tohoku and Nagano–Niigata passes in March 2026. Covers every JR East line, including Sendai, Aomori, Nikko and Kanazawa.

If you do buy the pass: where, and does it matter?
Buy on JR's official site if you can: it still sells the 7-day pass for ¥50,000, for a limited time, and you collect it at a station with your passport. Since October 2026, overseas agencies such as Klook or JRPass.com charge ¥53,000. For the extra ¥3,000 you get a voucher before you fly, English support and payment in your own currency.
Buy it before you fly if you want to activate it on arrival at Narita or Haneda. The pass starts on the day you choose, not the day you buy it.
