How to Book Shinkansen Tickets Online (2026): JR's Own Site or Klook, Step by Step
You don't need to queue at a ticket office. For most trips, booking on JR's own English site takes about ten minutes, costs the regular fare, and your Suica card becomes the ticket. Outside the big holidays, a few days ahead is plenty.
We booked Tokyo to Kyoto this way on 〈Nov 10, 2026〉, up to the payment screen, and noted the two places where it gets confusing for visitors.

Which site do I book on?
This is the first thing that confuses people: each JR company runs its own booking site, and the right one depends on your route.
When should I book?
Seats go on sale one month before, at 10:00 Japan time. On a normal weekday you can book the day before, or just ride in the unreserved cars.
Planning far ahead? JR Central's smartEX also takes some bookings up to a year early; your exact train and seat are confirmed one month before.
Book early for New Year (Dec 28–Jan 4), Golden Week (late April to early May) and Obon (mid-August).
Step by step: Tokyo to Kyoto on JR's site
- Create a free account with your email and card. This takes about three minutes.
- Search your trip. Enter Tokyo and Kyoto, the date and the time, then press Search.Screenshot · search results · 〈Nov 10, 2026〉
Nozomi is the fastest. Hikari stops a little more often and is about 25 minutes slower. - Pick your seat on the seat map with Select seat. For Mt Fuji, choose seat E (more below).
- Pay and link your IC card. Enter your Suica or other IC card number. At the gate, you just tap the card.Screenshot · IC card linking · 〈Nov 10, 2026〉
The card number is on the back of your Suica. With Suica on an iPhone, it's in the Wallet app.
〈The site asked us to register the IC card before payment, but the field only accepts 17 characters including "JE". It isn't explained on the page.〉
Which seat faces Mt Fuji?
Going from Tokyo towards Kyoto and Osaka, Mt Fuji is on the right: seat E in standard cars. Coming back, choose seat A. You'll see it about 40 minutes after leaving Tokyo, near Shin-Fuji, on a clear day.
What if…?
…I have a big suitcase?
On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines, bags over 160 cm (length + width + height, up to 250 cm) need a seat with an oversized baggage area. Book it as a seat option; without one, there's a ¥1,000 fee on board. Or send your bag ahead and travel light.
Luggage delivery between hotels →…my card is declined?
Turn on online payments in your bank's app and try again. If it still fails, buy at a station machine, or book through Klook and pay in your own currency.
…I miss my train?
With a regular ticket, take a later train the same day and sit in an unreserved car. Two exceptions: on peak days when Nozomi is all-reserved you can only stand between cars, and smartEX discount tickets are valid only on the train you booked.
Would the JR Pass be cheaper?
Only if you take several long trips in one week. For Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and back, separate tickets are about ¥20,000 cheaper. Check your own route in a minute.
