Ghibli Museum Tickets (2026): How to Book on Lawson, and What to Do If They're Sold Out
Ghibli Museum tickets go on sale once a month on Lawson Ticket, and weekend slots can be gone within the hour. The good news: booking them yourself is still the cheapest way in, and it isn't hard once you know the two places people get stuck. Agency tour tickets cost more, but they're a real fallback if you miss the release.
We went through the English booking flow on 〈Nov 10, 2026〉, right up to the payment screen. The screenshots below are from that run, including the card error that stopped us the first time.
Some links on this page are affiliate links. We always show the official way to book first.
When do tickets go on sale, and how fast do they go?
Every month on the 10th, at 10:00 Japan time, Lawson releases tickets for every day of the following month. So if you're visiting in March, you book on February 10. Put your date in below to see that moment in your own time zone.
〈On Nov 10, every Saturday and Sunday slot before 14:00 was marked sold out by 10:40. Weekday afternoons were still open the next morning.〉
So if your dates are flexible, a weekday afternoon is the easy win.
How to book on Lawson, step by step
The whole thing takes about five minutes once you're in. Have your card and everyone's passport names ready before 10:00.
- Open the English page and pick your day. The calendar marks sold-out days with ✕ and nearly-full days with △.Screenshot · Lawson month calendar · 〈Nov 10, 2026〉
Next month is below this month, so scroll down if you don't see it. - Choose an entry time and the number of tickets, then press Next. Slots start every hour from 10:00 to 16:00. You can enter within an hour of your slot.
- Type each visitor's name exactly as it appears in their passport, in capital letters. Staff may ask the buyer for ID at the door, and the group should enter together.Screenshot · name entry form · 〈Nov 10, 2026〉
Family name first, then given name. - Pay by card and press Confirm purchase (購入を確定する).
- Check your email. Your QR code arrives within a few minutes. Save a screenshot of it in case you're offline on the day. You'll need mobile data on the day for the QR code, maps and the bus. A Japan eSIM is the easiest fix, from about 〈$5〉 for a week.Compare Japan eSIMs ↗
What if the payment page rejects your card?
This is the one that got us. On our run, 〈the first card failed at the security check with "card authentication failed", and the tickets stayed in the basket for 10 minutes before they were released〉.
What fixed it: turning on online payments in the bank's app and trying again straight away. If yours keeps failing, try a different card rather than refreshing. Refreshing can lose your place.
Can I change the name or get a refund?
Tickets can't be refunded, and 〈the name can't be changed〉. If plans might shift, book a date you're sure of, even if it isn't your first choice.
Sold out: what are your real options?
If you must get inside the museum, the tour is the only way left. If not, there are cheaper ways to get your Ghibli fix.
A tour with a museum ticket included
That's much more than ¥1,000 direct. You're paying for guaranteed entry, plus transport and a guide. The museum's own site lists a JTB tour for overseas visitors. Dates fill up too, so check yours first.

Designed by Hayao Miyazaki, it comes to life at 12:00, 15:00, 18:00 and 20:00, plus 10:00 on weekends. Not the museum, but a fun 20 minutes.
Ghibli Park, Aichi
Bigger and easier to book: passes from ¥1,650, on sale two months ahead on the 10th at 14:00. A day trip from Tokyo by Shinkansen.

If your trip is far enough away, set an alarm for the 10th using the calculator above.
Is the museum worth all this effort?
If you grew up with the films, yes. It's a museum built for wandering: small rooms, spiral stairs, a rooftop robot soldier, and a short film you can only see here. Most people spend two to three hours.
Two things surprise visitors. It's smaller than they expect, and you can't take photos inside. If you're only lukewarm about Ghibli, the free clock or Ghibli Park may be a better use of your day.
Getting there
Take the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku to Mitaka (about 20 minutes). From the south exit, it's a 15-minute walk along the canal, or 5 minutes on the yellow community bus. An IC card such as Suica works on both. How to get a Suica as a visitor →
Make a day of it in west Tokyo
Mitaka is 20 minutes from Shinjuku, so it's easy to pair the museum with something else. These need booking ahead too.
SHIBUYA SKY at sunset
Sunset slots go first. A morning museum slot plus sunset in Shibuya is a classic day.

Unlimited subway rides for 24–72 hours. Worth it if you'll take four or more rides a day.
