Kawagoe Day Trip from Tokyo (2026): Which Ticket to Buy and How to Get Around

Kawagoe, the old merchant town with clay-walled warehouses, is about half an hour from Ikebukuro. You don't need to book anything: just buy the right ticket at the station.

For most people that's Tobu's Koedo Kawagoe Coupon: ¥1,110 from Ikebukuro for the return train plus a one-day bus pass in town. We read Tobu's official ticket pages on 6 November 2026.

No booking needed for Kawagoe. Buy the Koedo Kawagoe Coupon at the Tobu ticket machine in Ikebukuro on the day.

Which Kawagoe ticket should I buy?

If you'll eat and snack there

Kawagoe Retro Trip ticket (digital)

From ¥1,600Phone only

Return train plus the Kawagoe bus day pass, with a snack ticket (¥1,600), a meal ticket (¥2,400) or both (¥2,900). You pick the shop on the day.

Sold online from one month before. Prices are from Ikebukuro.

Verdict: the plain coupon is the better deal unless you'd spend the meal or snack money anyway. Both tickets cover the same train and bus; the digital one only adds food vouchers.

How do I get to Kawagoe?

Tobu Tojo Line
From Ikebukuro to Kawagoe or Kawagoeshi · about 30 min to Kawagoe by expressThe only line the Kawagoe coupons cover.
Seibu Shinjuku Line

JR Saikyo / Kawagoe Line
From Shinjuku to Kawagoe · about 1 hCovered by the JR Pass. Not covered by the Tobu coupons.
From Kawagoe Station, take Tobu's Koedo Meisho Meguri Bus there (it's in the coupon's bus pass; check the bus says Tobu) and walk back through town to Hon-Kawagoe or Kawagoeshi.

How to buy the Koedo Kawagoe Coupon

  1. Go to the Tobu Tojo Line ticket machines at Ikebukuro. Tobu's gates are separate from JR's. Look for the Tobu signs.
  2. Find the Koedo Kawagoe Coupon on the screen. Its Japanese name is 小江戸川越クーポン. Follow the on-screen steps; if you can't find it, buy it at the ticket window instead.
  3. Pay at the machine. The machine shows which payment methods it takes. A ticket window is also an option.
  4. Keep the bus pass part with you. It is your ticket for the Tobu buses in Kawagoe, so don't throw it away.
Bus stops and the warehouse street are easiest to find on a phone map. A Japan eSIM is set up before you fly.

The coupon isn't sold at Kawagoe or Kawagoeshi stations, so buy it before you leave Tokyo. Tobu also sells a pass for foreign visitors, the KAWAGOE DISCOUNT PASS Premium: since 1 April 2026 it is ¥1,200 (child ¥600) for a discounted return from Ikebukuro plus Tobu buses in designated sections, including the Koedo loop bus. That is more than the coupon, so the coupon is still the one to buy. The cheaper standard KAWAGOE DISCOUNT PASS was discontinued on 31 March 2026.

What if…?

…I'm going on New Year's or the festival?

Both coupons can't be used on Kawagoe Festival day (usually mid-October) or from 31 December to 3 January. Pay normal fares on those days.

…I have a JR Pass?

Use JR to Kawagoe Station instead of Tobu, then pay for the bus in town. The Tobu coupon is still cheap if you'd rather go from Ikebukuro.

If you have one more free day, Mt Fuji and Kawaguchiko make a good full day out. That one needs planning: the highway bus is booked online ahead.
