Japan eSIM or Pocket Wi-Fi? Mobile Data for Your Trip (2026)
You'll need data from the moment you land: for maps, train routes, taxi apps and booking QR codes. If your phone supports eSIM, buy a Japan eSIM before you fly and switch it on when the plane lands. Nothing to pick up, nothing to return.
A pocket Wi-Fi router is better for a group sharing one connection, or for a phone that can't take an eSIM. We checked which rental and SIM counters Narita Airport lists on its official site on 6–7 November 2026. Plan prices can change at any time, so we leave them to the sellers' pages.
Some links on this page are affiliate links. If your own carrier's roaming plan is good value, use it.
eSIM, pocket Wi-Fi or SIM card?
eSIM
Install a profile from a QR code. Your own SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts from home. Nothing to collect at the airport.

A small router shared by several devices. You carry it, keep it charged and return it before you fly.

Swap it in on arrival. Sold at airport counters and SIM vending machines. Keep your home SIM somewhere safe.
Your carrier's roaming
Check whether your home plan covers Japan and what roaming costs per day. Compare before buying anything.
Will an eSIM work on my phone?
- The phone supports eSIM (check Settings → Mobile data / Cellular → Add eSIM)
- The phone is not locked to your home carrier
- You can keep your home SIM active for calls, and turn its data roaming off
- The plan is data-only or includes a Japanese number: if a booking or app you plan to use asks for a Japanese number, pick a plan that includes one
- You know when the plan starts counting days (from installation, from first connection in Japan, or from a date you pick): check the seller's page
How to set up a Japan eSIM before you fly
- Buy the plan a few days ahead Pick the number of days and the data amount. The QR code arrives by email or in the seller's app.Compare the same number of days and data amount across plans before you pay.See Klook eSIM plans ↗
- Install it at home, on Wi-Fi Scan the QR code in your phone's settings. Label the new line "Japan" so you can find it later.
- Leave it switched off until you land If the plan starts on first connection, keep the Japan line's data off until you land so it doesn't start early.
- On landing, switch data to the Japan line Turn on the Japan line's data, and data roaming for that line if the seller's instructions say so. Turn your home line's data roaming off to avoid charges.
- Test before you leave the airport Open a map and a train route. If it doesn't connect, restart the phone and check the APN setting the seller gave you.
Picking up a pocket Wi-Fi or SIM at Narita
Narita says all of these are before departure passport control. Landing after the counters close? An eSIM installed at home doesn't depend on counter hours. Flying into Haneda? See Haneda to Tokyo.
How much data do you need?
Your phone's settings show how much mobile data you use in a normal day at home. Pick a plan with some room above that, and choose a larger or unlimited plan if you stream video, make video calls or share the connection with a laptop.
Free Wi-Fi exists at airports, stations and convenience stores, but you'll need data on the street: to find the right exit, call a taxi with GO or Uber, or show a QR ticket at a gate.
What if…?
…the eSIM installed but there's no signal?
Check the seller's instructions on whether data roaming must be on for the Japan line, and turn it on if so. Then restart. If it still fails, check the APN in the seller's instructions.
…I deleted the eSIM by mistake?
Don't scan the old QR code again yet. Contact the seller's support and ask whether they can issue a new one.
…my phone is carrier-locked?
Use a pocket Wi-Fi. A locked phone can still join a Wi-Fi router.
Pocket Wi-Fi on Klook ↗…I need to return the pocket Wi-Fi but my flight leaves early?
Check the return options and deadline in your rental booking before you pick the router up, so you know where to drop it on your last day.
Questions
Do I get a Japanese phone number with an eSIM?
Data-only plans don't include one. If you need a Japanese number, check the plan description before you buy.
Can I use LINE or WhatsApp with a data-only eSIM?
Yes. Messaging and internet calls run over data. Your home number keeps working for texts if your home SIM stays on.
Is an eSIM cheaper on Klook or direct from the provider?
It depends on the day and the plan. Compare the same days and data on both before you pay.
Narita Airport's official page for mobile phone, Wi-Fi rental and SIM sales: the companies, terminals and hours listed above, and that all counters are before departure passport control.
Narita's page did not mention eSIM services or free airport Wi-Fi details.
We did not check eSIM or rental prices: sellers can change them at any time, so this page leaves prices to the sellers' pages.
Ready to go?
Install the eSIM at home and switch it on when you land, and you can look up the route into the city from the airport.
