Missed Your Shinkansen? Changes, Refunds and What Each Ticket Allows (2026)
Don't panic and don't buy a new ticket yet. With a normal Shinkansen ticket, a missed train isn't lost money: you can ride a later train the same day in a non-reserved car. What you lose is your reserved seat.
There are three exceptions: smartEX Hayatoku discount fares, all-reserved Nozomi on holiday dates, and trains like Hayabusa that have no non-reserved cars. We read the rules on JR Central, JR East, JR West and smartEX official pages on 7 November 2026.

I just missed my train. What do I do right now?
- Check which ticket you have. Paper ticket from a station, smartEX, JR-EAST Train Reservation, or an agency. The rules below depend on it.
- Find the non-reserved cars on the next train. On Nozomi they're cars 1 and 2 (except on all-reserved dates). Hikari and Kodama have non-reserved cars too.Need the next train time and car numbers on the go? Mobile data helps.Japan eSIM on Klook ↗
- Go through the gate with the same ticket or IC card. A missed reserved ticket is valid for a non-reserved seat on a later train the same day.
- Want a reserved seat instead? Buy a new reserved seat ticket. JR says you pay the full reserved seat charge again.
When can't I take a later train?
Hayatoku fares
Valid only on the train and seat you booked. If you miss it, you need a new ticket at the normal price. They can't be changed to another train either.
All-reserved Nozomi
On dates such as 25 Dec 2026 – 5 Jan 2027, Nozomi has no non-reserved cars. With your reserved ticket you may stand on the deck, or take a later Hikari or Kodama non-reserved.
Hayabusa, Komachi, Kagayaki
These trains are all-reserved every day. JR East lets you change to a standing place on a later train the same day. With a Hayabusa or Komachi ticket, that later train must also be a Hayabusa or Komachi.
Oversized baggage
On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, non-reserved cars have no oversized baggage area. For a bag of 161–250 cm, book a new seat with an oversized baggage area, or pay a ¥1,000 baggage fee on board.
Can I change before the train leaves?
Yes, and this is much better than missing it. The rules depend on where you bought the ticket.
How much is a refund?
A refund is only possible before the train leaves. These are the standard JR fees for unused tickets.
JR Central “How to change your tickets & get refunds”: one free change; ¥220 / ¥340 / 30% fees; missed reserved ticket valid for non-reserved seats the same day; full charge for a reserved seat.
JR East Ticket Exchange and Refund Policy: same rules; standing on later Hayabusa, Komachi, Hayate and Kagayaki the same day.
smartEX Service page and FAQ: unlimited free changes; ¥320 refund; Hayatoku valid only for the booked train.
JR Central Nozomi page: on all-reserved days a missed Nozomi means the deck, or Hikari and Kodama non-reserved.
JAPAN RAIL PASS Nozomi/Mizuho ticket page: apart from non-reserved seats, valid only for the designated train; no refund after the train's departure time.
What if the train was late or cancelled?
JR doesn't pay for hotels or other costs caused by a delay. Rail passes are not extended either.
I have a JR Pass. What happens?
Your pass still covers the journey. What you lose is the seat reservation. For a new reserved seat, ask at a JR ticket office. If you bought the Nozomi/Mizuho ticket for pass holders with a reserved seat, it's valid only for the train on the ticket, and JR gives no refund once that train has left.
Other situations
…I lost my ticket?
You have to buy the same ticket again. It's marked as a repurchase. When you arrive, the repurchased ticket is stamped as paid: keep it as your receipt.
…I got off at the wrong station?
With smartEX, the rest of the journey is void once you leave. With a station ticket, talk to staff at the gate before you exit.
…I booked through an agency?
Check the agency's own terms for changes and refunds, ideally before you travel.
