Mt Fuji Day Tour from Tokyo (2026): How to Choose One, and When to Go by Bus Instead
A Fuji day tour makes sense if you have one day, don't want to plan, or are travelling in a group. If you're fine with a bus timetable, the highway bus from Shinjuku costs ¥4,000 return booked online.
When you compare tours, check three things: whether the 5th Station is on the route (the road closes for part of winter), where you're picked up, and what happens if Fuji is in cloud. We read the bus, railway, road and tourism pages on 6–7 November 2026. Tour prices change by listing and date, so we don't quote them: check the price on the listing.
Some links on this page are affiliate links. We also give the bus and train fares if you'd rather go on your own.
Tour or do it yourself?
Highway bus
Reservations open one month before. You then need the lake buses to get around.
Fuji Excursion
All seats need a reserved or seat-unassigned ticket. Partly covered by the JR Pass.
Day tour
Fixed times, but the stops and seats are sorted.
Affiliate linkVerdict: the bus is ¥4,000 return per person online, less than half the Fuji Excursion's ¥8,400. Compare that with the tour price on the listing. A tour starts to make sense when you want the 5th Station, Oshino Hakkai and Chureito Pagoda in one day: they are spread out, and on your own you have to fit each leg around the local bus timetables.
What should I compare on a tour listing?
Will my tour go to the Mt Fuji 5th Station?
Only when the Fuji Subaru Line toll road is open to the top. In winter 2025–26 it ran to the 5th Station until 18 January, then only as far as the 1st or 4th Station car parks because of snow, and reopened fully on 18 April 2026. For winter 2026–27, check Yamanashi Prefecture's road notices before you book.
In summer, private cars are banned from the road (3 July 18:00 to 10 September 18:00 in 2026), and buses and shuttles carry everyone up. A tour removes that headache. Mt Fuji 5th Station: how to get there →
How do the seasons change a Fuji tour?
December to March
In winter 2025–26 the road ran to the 5th Station only until 18 January. Check whether your tour still lists the 5th Station for your date.
March to May
Cherry blossoms around Chureito Pagoda. The 5th Station road reopened 18 April in 2026.
July to September
Climbing season. Private cars are banned from the Subaru Line from 3 July to 10 September (2026), so buses, shuttles and tours carry everyone to the 5th Station.
November
The Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival runs 7–29 November in 2026, lit up from sunset to 21:00.

…the forecast says cloud?
Check the free-cancellation deadline on the listing before you book. On the KKday tour linked here it is 8 days before, long before a reliable forecast, and a hidden Fuji is not refunded. If you want to decide on the weather, the highway bus opens one month ahead and can be changed until departure.
…tours are sold out for my date?
Take the highway bus instead: reservations open one month before. Or check the other platform for the same date.

Fuji + Hakone in one day is a long coach day. With 3 days, the Fuji Hakone Pass (¥11,100) covers both areas, but not the bus from Shinjuku. Fuji Hakone Pass →
