Shinkansen Green Car vs GranClass (2026): Is First Class Worth It?

Standard Shinkansen seats are already comfortable, so first class is a treat, not a need. The Green Car gives you a wider seat, with four across instead of five. GranClass is a step above, with 18 leather seats and, on many trains, a meal and free drinks, but only on lines run from Tokyo to the north and to Kanazawa.

Our verdict: GranClass is worth it once, on a long Hayabusa or Kagayaki ride with attendant service. The Green Car is worth it on a crowded holiday or with a JR Pass you use a lot. We checked the rules on JR Central, JR East and JR Pass official pages on 7 November 2026.

Want first class on the whole trip? The Green JR Pass covers Green Cars on JR lines. It costs more than the standard pass, so check you'll use it.
