Which Shinkansen Seat Sees Mt Fuji? Seat E, and How to Book It (2026)
Want to see Mt Fuji from the bullet train? Ride the Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo–Nagoya–Kyoto–Osaka) and book seat E in an ordinary car, or seat D in the Green Car. Going from Tokyo towards Osaka, that is the right-hand side.
The view depends on the weather, and JR does not promise it. We checked JR Central's official guides on 7 November 2026.

Which seat is on the Mt Fuji side?
JR Central's Shinkansen guide says: "For the best view of Mt. Fuji, choose Seat E in Standard Class or Seat D in Green Class." Its Odawara travel story says the same and adds that you can choose a window or aisle seat when booking.
Going from Osaka towards Tokyo, Fuji is on the left, and seat E (Green: D) is still the Fuji side: JR Central's Shizuoka travel guide and JR Central Tours both say the E seat works in both directions. JR Central Tours adds that the view towards Tokyo has no oncoming trains in the way.
When does Mt Fuji appear, and for how long?
JR Central names two main viewing stretches: Shin-Yokohama–Odawara and Mishima–Shin-Fuji. JR Central Tours says the best moment for a photo is the roughly 3 minutes around Shin-Fuji Station. From Tokyo it is about 50 minutes to Mishima and about an hour to Shin-Fuji on trains that stop there; a Nozomi, which does not stop, passes sooner.
How do I book seat E?
- Book on smartEX (JR Central) or JR-WEST Online Train Reservation. Both sell the Tokaido Shinkansen in English. smartEX guide →
- Choose a reserved seat, then seat E. Pick seat E in an ordinary car (or D in Green). E is the window seat on the two-seat side; D next to it is the aisle seat.
- At the station, ask at the ticket office. Say "E seat, Fuji side" or show (E席 富士山側).
- With a JR Pass, book the seat the same way. Use JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation or a ticket office. Hikari and Kodama need no extra ticket; Nozomi does. JR Pass and Nozomi →A Japan eSIM lets you check the Fuji forecast and change your seat on the day.Japan eSIM on Klook ↗
JR Central's "Shinkansen Perfect Guide": seat E in Standard Class, seat D in Green Class for the best Mt Fuji view.
JR Central's Odawara travel story: right-hand side from Tokyo towards Kyoto or Osaka; visibility depends on weather and operating conditions; window or aisle can be chosen when booking.
JR Central's "MOUNT FUJI" page: Fuji on the right side; about an hour from Tokyo to Shin-Fuji on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
JR Central's Shizuoka travel guide (Japanese): seat E in both directions; main views Shin-Yokohama–Odawara and Mishima–Shin-Fuji; Kodama stops at Shin-Fuji, Kodama and some Hikari at Mishima.
JR Central Tours seat guide (Japanese): E (Green D) in both directions; about 3 minutes around Shin-Fuji; clearest in winter (December–February).
Does it matter which train I take?
Kodama
The only type that stops at Shin-Fuji, and it stops at Mishima too, so it is the train to take if you want to get off near the mountain.
Hikari
Covered with no extra ticket. Same seat E rule.
Can I see Mt Fuji from other Shinkansen lines?
JR Central's Fuji viewing advice is for the Tokaido Shinkansen, which passes the foot of the mountain. The Tohoku (to Sendai), Hokuriku (to Nagano and Kanazawa) and Joetsu lines head north from Tokyo, away from it.
What if…?
…all E seats are taken?
Try a different train or the Green Car (seat D). A D seat in an ordinary car is next to E, so you can still look past your neighbour.
…I am in a non-reserved car?
Sit on the two-seat side (D–E) on the right going west. Nozomi non-reserved seats are in cars 1–2.
…it is cloudy?
There is no second chance from the train. A day trip to the Fuji Five Lakes gives you more time for the cloud to lift.
