Tokyo to Osaka by Shinkansen (2026): Price, Time and How to Book
Tokyo to Osaka is the busiest Shinkansen trip in Japan, and the simplest. Take the Nozomi to Shin-Osaka: 2 hours 21 minutes on the fastest trains (the midday Nozomi 153 takes 2 hours 27) and ¥14,720 for a reserved seat.
Note that the train stops at Shin-Osaka, not Osaka Station. A JR Pass does not pay off for a simple return. We checked the fares and rules on JR's official pages on 6 November 2026.

Nozomi
From 2h21. Every few minutes at busy times. Non-reserved seats in cars 1–2.
Hikari
2h48 to 3h06. Covered by the JR Pass with no extra ticket. Non-reserved seats in cars 1–5.
Kodama
Stops at every station, 3h42 to 3h54.
Shin-Osaka or Osaka Station: where do I get off?
The Shinkansen does not go to Osaka Station. It ends at Shin-Osaka (or continues west to Hiroshima and Hakata). A regular ticket from Tokyo shows "Osaka city" (大阪市内) as its destination, so it also covers the short JR ride on to Osaka Station or any other JR station in the zone. A smartEX ticket covers the Shinkansen only: the JR fare onwards is paid separately, for example from the IC card you board with.
How far in advance should I book?
Seats open at 10:00 Japan time, one month before travel. The Nozomi runs every few minutes at busy times, so there are many trains to choose from.
Book on the first day for New Year, Golden Week and Obon. On some peak days the Nozomi is all reserved, so a non-reserved ticket means standing. Busy seasons →
How do I book Tokyo to Osaka online?

Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo to Osaka?
For a return trip, no. The classic Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo loop is ¥29,470 in regular tickets (¥14,170 + ¥580 + ¥14,720). A 7-day JR Pass is ¥50,000 on the official site.
Is there a cheaper way than the Shinkansen?
Night bus
Overnight. Saves a hotel night but you arrive tired. Compare fares and times on the bus operators' sites.
Domestic flight
Haneda to Itami or Kansai. Fares vary; add airport transfers and check-in time.

Going on to Hiroshima?
Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima takes 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes on the Nozomi. A Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima reserved return alone is ¥21,900, and the 5-day Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (¥17,000) covers that Sanyo Shinkansen section plus JR trains around Kansai.
