Night Bus from Tokyo to Osaka or Kyoto (2026): Is It Worth It?

You want to get from Tokyo to Osaka or Kyoto for as little as possible, and you don't mind a long night. A night bus does that: it leaves Tokyo late in the evening, arrives the next morning, and replaces a hotel night. Compare its fare for your date with the Shinkansen's ¥14,720.

It is worth it if you can sleep sitting up and you book a 3-across seat. If you have only a few days, or you would arrive in the early morning with nowhere to go, take the Shinkansen. We checked WILLER's official pages and JR's fares on 7 November 2026. Bus fares change by date and seat, so this page gives no fixed bus price: search your date to see it.

Is the night bus worth it?

Good fit

Take the night bus if…

You are on a tight budget, you have a week or more, you can sleep in a reclining seat, and you would otherwise pay for a hotel that night.

Bad fit

Take the train if…

You have a short trip, you are tall or sleep badly, you travel with small children, or you need to be fresh for a full day of sightseeing on arrival.

The bus saves the most when it also replaces a hotel night. If you would pay for that night anyway, add breakfast, a shower or a day-use bath, and a tired first day, and the gap to the Shinkansen gets smaller.

Which seat type should I book?

Seat layout matters more than the operator. WILLER names its seats like this on its official site:

4 across

Relax, Prime

Two pairs of seats per row. Relax has a hood (canopy) to hide your face; Prime is an upgraded Relax seat. You may sit next to a stranger.

3 across

ReBorn, Luxia, Comodo

Three single seats per row with aisles between. ReBorn is designed for sleep, Luxia has curtains between seats, Comodo has a supportive headrest.

3 across, private

Dome

A shell-shaped seat with a canopy that makes a small private space.

Other operators use their own names. Check the number of seats per row, not the name.

How do I book a night bus?

  1. Search the route on the operator's site or an agency. WILLER has an English site. Agencies such as Klook show several operators at once.
  2. Pick the date and the seat type. Look at seats per row and the arrival stop, not only the price.
  3. Pay and keep the booking confirmation. WILLER adds a ¥330 arrangement fee per bus. It is not refunded if you cancel.
  4. Board with your ticket. Follow the booking site's instructions for what to show when you board.
Your booking, maps and the bus company's delay notices all need mobile data. A Japan eSIM is set up before you fly.
