Tokyo to Osaka (2026): Shinkansen, Bus, Plane or Car Compared
You need to get from Tokyo to Osaka and you are weighing up the train, a bus and a cheap flight. For most visitors the answer is the Shinkansen: the Nozomi takes 2 hours 21 to 27 minutes from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka, costs ¥14,720 with a reserved seat, and runs every few minutes at busy times.
Take the night bus only to save money and a hotel night. A flight is short, but the airport trips at both ends add time. A car makes sense only if you want to stop on the way. We checked the Shinkansen fares and times on JR's official pages on 6 November 2026; bus and air fares change daily, so we don't quote them.

Compare the whole trip, not just the ride. From a hotel in central Tokyo to one in central Osaka:

Is the night bus a good idea?
Yes, if money matters more than comfort. Buses leave Busta Shinjuku (4th floor) and Tokyo Station in the evening and arrive in Osaka the next morning. Book a 3-across seat if you want to sleep.

Is flying from Tokyo to Osaka faster?
Not by as much as the flight time suggests. The flight itself is short, but you add the trip to Haneda, security, boarding and the trip from Itami or Kansai into Osaka. Flying makes sense when:
- You found a very cheap low-cost fare and checked what the airline charges for your bags.
- You are connecting to or from an international flight at Kansai Airport.
- You are staying near Haneda or near Itami.
From Itami, the airport is close to the city. Itami to Osaka → From Kansai Airport, the trip into Osaka is longer. Kansai Airport to Osaka →
Should I drive from Tokyo to Osaka?
Only if the drive is the point: a day around Fuji Five Lakes or Hakone on the way. Then you pay tolls, fuel, any one-way drop-off fee the company charges, and parking in Osaka. You also need the right permit.
