Osaka: What to Book Before You Go (2026)

Osaka is an easy city: food, neon and short subway hops, almost none of it booked in advance. The exceptions are Universal Studios Japan, the Pokémon Cafe and a few timed-entry sights. Sort those out first, then just turn up for the rest.

On passes, the honest answer is that you only need one on a day packed with paid sights. Add up the gate prices before you buy the Osaka Amazing Pass. We read the official pages for every price below on 6 November 2026.

Pass worth it?

Only on a day of paid sights. Add up the gate prices and compare with the Amazing Pass (¥3,500 for one day).

What do you need to book before you go to Osaka?

Universal Studios Japan

Hard on busy days. Prices go by date and USJ says they may be raised after sales open. Book as soon as your date is fixed.

Super Nintendo World

Hard. Entry needs an Area Timed Entry Ticket or a numbered ticket on the day, which can run out early. Certain Express Passes, or tickets from select travel agencies, guarantee area entry.

Pokémon Cafe Osaka

Hard. The whole month opens at 18:00 Japan time on the 1st of the month before. No walk-ins.

Kaiyukan aquarium

Medium. Date-and-time entry. E-tickets up to 30 days ahead; the window sells same-day only and you may have to wait.

Dotonbori river cruise

Easy, except evenings. Same-day timed tickets at the counter, or prepaid online. Evening boats sell out early.

Osaka Castle

Easy. ¥1,200 at the gate or online. 9:00–18:00, last entry 17:30.

Should you buy USJ tickets from the official site or an agency?

The official store is the reference price. Agencies such as Klook and KKday also sell dated USJ tickets; compare the price for your date. Express Passes always need a separate Studio Pass.

How do you get from Kansai Airport to Osaka?

Namba, Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi

Nankai rapi:t or Airport Express

rapi:t fastest 34 min to Namba (¥700 seat fee on top of the fare). Airport Express about 45 min, no seat fee.

Umeda, Shin-Osaka, Tennoji

JR HARUKA

Visitors can buy a one-way HARUKA ticket: ¥1,600 to Tennoji, ¥1,900 to Osaka or Shin-Osaka. Sold overseas or on JR-WEST Online, not in Japan.

Heavy luggage

Do you need a pass to get around Osaka?

Not for most days. Osaka Metro fares run from ¥190 to ¥390 and you can tap through with an IC card or a contactless Visa, Mastercard or JCB card. A pass only pays off if you ride a lot or visit several paid sights in one day.

When does the Osaka Amazing Pass pay off?

Add up what you would pay at the gate. The pass is ¥3,500 for one day.

Osaka Castle + Dotonbori cruise

¥1,200 + ¥2,000 = ¥3,200Plus a few metro rides, and the pass just about breaks even.

Add Umeda Sky before 15:00

A food-and-shopping day

The pass day runs from 3:00 to 2:59 the next morning, and the cruise and castle boat need a timed ticket exchanged at the counter.

The Osaka Amazing Pass site listed ¥3,500 (1 day) and ¥5,000 (2 days), no JR, and about 40 free sights. USJ and Kaiyukan were not on the list.

Kaiyukan's ticket page said entry is by date and time, e-tickets are sold generally up to 30 days ahead, and the window sells same-day only.

Osaka Info listed Osaka Castle at ¥1,200 and 9:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30), closed 28 Dec–1 Jan.

Pokémon Cafe's news page said December 2026 opened at 18:00 on 1 November. USJ's 30 June 2026 news release said date prices may be raised after sales open and recommended buying early.

JR West's HARUKA page listed the visitor one-way ticket at ¥1,600 (Tennoji) and ¥1,900 (Osaka, Shin-Osaka) from 1 November 2026.

What if…?

…USJ is sold out or too expensive on my date?

Try a weekday next to it. Prices go by date, so a day's difference can matter.

…I couldn't get the Pokémon Cafe?

Seats come back through last-minute cancellations. Check again the evening before and on the morning of your date.

…the Kaiyukan time I want is full?

Try other time slots that day, or another date. The window sells same-day tickets, but you may wait.

…I have a JR Pass?

It covers JR trains such as the loop line and HARUKA, but not Osaka Metro. Is the JR Pass worth it? →

Coming from Tokyo?

The Nozomi Shinkansen takes about 2½ hours from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka and costs ¥14,720 with a reserved seat. Book USJ and the Pokémon Cafe first, then leave the rest of Osaka unplanned.
