Kansai Area Pass (2026): Sales Ended. What to Buy Instead
If you planned to buy the Kansai Area Pass for Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, the classic paper version is gone: JR West ended sales on 30 September 2026. Passes bought before then still work until they expire.
The closest replacement is the WEST QR Kansai Area Pass, a phone ticket sold only by travel agencies outside Japan, from ¥2,700 for one day. On days without HARUKA, compare it with an ICOCA card or the ¥3,000 Kansai Mini Pass. We read JR West's official pass pages on 6 November 2026; the figures below come from them.

Is the Kansai Area Pass still sold?
Not in its old form. JR West's official page now opens with "Sales ended as of September 30, 2026", and the pass no longer appears in JR West's list of passes. The page does not name a successor.
What JR West does still sell is a separate product that covers the same kinds of trains: the WEST QR Kansai Area Pass. It lives on your phone as a QR code and goes through the ticket gate directly. There's no paper ticket to collect.
Is the WEST QR Kansai Area Pass worth it?
Only on a day with HARUKA, and then only if you keep riding. Compare it with JR West's WEST QR HARUKA One-way Ticket, which is also sold only through agencies outside Japan.
If you only ride from the airport to Kyoto, both cost ¥2,700. If you only ride to Osaka, the one-way ticket is cheaper (¥1,900). The pass pays off when you keep riding on the same day, for example Kansai Airport to Kyoto and then on to Nara. A day of Osaka–Kyoto–Osaka without the airport is ¥1,160 by JR, well under the pass price. On those days, tap an ICOCA card instead.
What does it cover?
That last row matters in Kyoto. Many temples are easier to reach by bus or subway, which this pass doesn't cover. See Kyoto buses.
Who can buy it?
- A passport issued by a country other than Japan
- Entering Japan as a "Temporary Visitor" (短期滞在). Japanese nationals can't use it, even with permanent residency abroad
- A smartphone with mobile data. JR West says a screenshot or a printout of the QR code won't open the gate
- No phone? You can register the pass under a companion's WEST-QR account, but then you must travel together
How to buy and use the WEST QR pass
Buy a voucher from an agency before you fly
JR West sells WEST QR tickets only through travel agencies outside Japan. Choose the number of days.
Register the voucher on the WEST-QR website
Open the link on your voucher, create a WEST-QR account and link the ticket to it.
Reserve your HARUKA seats
Up to 2 reserved seats, from 30 days before the ride, on the same website. The pass also covers HARUKA's non-reserved cars.
On day one, press Use ticket and scan the QR code at the gate
The pass can be started from 4:00 on the first day. Hold the QR code over the reader at the automatic gate.
Once you press Use ticket, the pass can't be refunded, even if trains stop. Before that, refunds go through the agency you bought from, which may charge a fee.
What if…?
…I'm already in Japan and didn't buy one?
You can't buy the WEST QR pass in Japan. Use ICOCA and pay for HARUKA separately. JR West's Kansai Mini Pass page also lists only travel agencies outside Japan.
ICOCA guide →…my phone battery dies?
The ticket is on your phone only. Carry a power bank: JR West says screenshots and printouts of the QR code don't work at the gate.
…I want to go to Himeji Castle or Kinosaki?
Himeji, yes: JR West's WEST QR pass page names Himeji in the area. Kinosaki Onsen and Okayama are outside it: look at the Kansai WIDE Area Pass.

Tap in and out, pay the normal fare. Works on JR, subways, private lines and most buses, which no JR pass does.
Kansai Thru Pass or Osaka Amazing Pass
If your days are mostly Osaka Metro, Hankyu, Keihan or Kintetsu, a non-JR pass fits better.
What we checked
JR West's Kansai Area Pass page: "Sales ended as of September 30, 2026". Last prices were 1 day ¥2,800 to 4 days ¥7,000. The page still says its information is current as of 1 August 2024.
JR West's WEST QR Kansai Area Pass page: prices ¥2,700 / ¥4,700 / ¥5,500 / ¥6,700, sold only by overseas agencies, HARUKA seats booked on the WEST-QR site up to 30 days ahead.
JR West's pass list: the Kansai Area Pass is no longer listed. The Kansai Mini Pass page shows ¥3,000 for 3 days, sold through agencies outside Japan.
JR West's WEST QR HARUKA One-way Ticket page: ¥1,900 to Osaka and ¥2,700 to Kyoto, under a note that the price changed for tickets sold from 1 November 2026. An archived copy of JR West's HARUKA One-way Ticket page from September 2026 showed ¥1,800 and ¥2,200, so the prices shown now are the new ones.
We did not buy a WEST QR ticket, so the screen names above come from JR West's instructions, not from our own phone.
Still deciding?
For Osaka and Kyoto only, ICOCA costs less than the pass (Osaka–Kyoto–Osaka is ¥1,160). Add the WEST QR pass on the day you land at Kansai Airport. Going further, to Hiroshima or Okayama, changes the answer.
