KANSAI RAILWAY PASS Lite (ex Kansai Thru Pass) 2026: Price, Lines, Is It Worth It?
You searched for the Kansai Thru Pass and found a different name. Its current version is the KANSAI RAILWAY PASS Lite: 2 or 3 consecutive days on the private railways and subways around Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe.
It only pays off on days full of long private-railway trips, so add up your own fares first. For short city hops it doesn't, and it now leaves out the Kyoto subway and all buses. We read the operator's pages on 6 November 2026; the details below come from them.
Some links on this page are affiliate links. This pass is sold only through travel sites, so the links below are also the official ways to buy it.
Is the Kansai Railway Pass worth it?
Divide the price by the days: about ¥2,600 a day on the 2-day pass and about ¥2,170 a day on the 3-day pass. You need to ride more than that each day.
For the longer trips (Kintetsu to Nara, Hankyu to Kyoto, Hanshin or Hankyu to Kobe, Nankai to Koyasan), look up each return fare on the railway's own website and add them up day by day. If a day doesn't reach the daily figure above, single tickets or an IC card cost less. If you mostly stay in Osaka, the Osaka Amazing Pass or an ICOCA card is cheaper.
Which lines can you ride, and which can't you?
Subways and private railways
The operator describes the area as subways and private railways across Kansai and shows the exact lines on an area map on its official page. Check that map before you rely on a line.
Small local lines
Eizan Railway (to Kurama and Kibune), Hankai Tramway and Mizuma Railway are named on the official how-to page, with their own boarding rules.
Kyoto City Subway and buses
This is the big change from the old Kansai Thru Pass. In Kyoto, buy a Kyoto subway and bus pass for the city day.
JR and Randen
No JR at all, so no Haruka and no JR to Nara or Himeji. Randen (the Arashiyama tram) isn't covered either.
How do you use the digital pass at the gates?
- Buy it on one of the four travel sites. The operator lists Klook, KKday, WAUG and Trip.com. Each ticket must be started within 3 months of purchase.
- Tap Start Using after 3:00 a.m. on the first day. A day lasts until 2:59 a.m. the next morning. If you start it between midnight and 2:59 a.m., it stops at 3:00 a.m.
- Scan the QR code at a gate that reads QR codes. Open the Trains tab, hold the QR code to the reader, and go through one person at a time. Screenshots and printouts are not accepted. You need your phone online with the camera allowed in the browser. A Japan eSIM avoids hunting for Wi-Fi at the gate.Japan eSIM on Klook ↗
- Show the screen for discounts. Some sights give a discount on the day you use the pass, one per person. In the special-offers tab, choose the offer, tap Use and show the screen to staff: it expires 5 minutes after you tap Use.
What if…?
…a gate has no QR reader?
Not every gate reads QR codes. Use a gate with a QR reader, or ask station staff. The official page asks you to use a gate that recognises QR codes.
…a train is cancelled or a sight is closed?
No refund after you start the pass, including for bad weather or maintenance. Unused passes follow the seller's rules.
…I need JR too?
Look at the JR options on which pass or the Kansai Wide Area Pass. The two don't combine.
…I bought from a reseller or auction?
The operator takes no responsibility for passes bought outside the official sellers, so buy from one of the four sites.

What we checked on 7 November 2026
The operator's KANSAI RAILWAY PASS Lite page listed 2 days ¥5,200 and 3 days ¥6,500 on consecutive days, sales from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, online sales only through Klook, KKday, WAUG and Trip.com, and no physical ticket.
It listed JR, Kyoto City Subway, the Keihan Keishin and Ishiyama-Sakamoto lines, Randen and buses as not covered, and said screenshots and printouts are not accepted.
We have not bought or used the pass. We don't list private-railway fares because we couldn't confirm them on each railway's site; the Osaka Metro fare range is from Osaka Metro.
Day trips that suit this pass
Still deciding?
Write down your private-railway trips for each day and add up the fares. If each day comes to more than about ¥2,600 (2-day) or ¥2,170 (3-day), buy the pass. If your plan leans on JR or Kyoto buses, it isn't the right pass.
