Kansai WIDE Area Pass (2026): Is It Worth It, and Where It Goes
If your Kansai trip includes a long ride, such as Kinosaki Onsen, Okayama or Shirahama, this pass can pay for itself. Below is how to check it against your own plan. If you're only moving between Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, it's hard to reach the ¥12,000 price.
It costs ¥12,000 for 5 consecutive days and includes the Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. We read JR West's official page on 6 November 2026. That page still says its information is current as of 1 August 2024, so re-check the price before you pay.

Is the Kansai WIDE Area Pass worth it?
The pass costs ¥12,000 for 5 consecutive days. Whether it pays off depends on your long rides, so add up the separate fares for the trips you plan, using JR West's fare search, and compare them with ¥12,000. Count:
- The airport train: HARUKA between Kansai Airport and Osaka or Kyoto is covered, reserved seat included.
- Each long trip out of the cities: Kinosaki Onsen, Amanohashidate, Okayama, Takamatsu, Tottori or Shirahama.
- Shinkansen rides between Shin-Osaka and Okayama, Nozomi included.
- City hops too, but they add little: Osaka–Kyoto by JR is ¥580 each way.
If your 5 days are only Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, it takes a lot of ¥580 rides to reach ¥12,000. An ICOCA card is simpler for those days.
What does it cover?
Kansai WIDE vs the other passes
ICOCA or WEST QR Kansai Area Pass
The old Kansai Area Pass ended on 30 September 2026. For city hops, ICOCA charges only the fares you ride: Osaka–Kyoto is ¥580 by JR.
Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass
¥17,000 for 5 days, with the Shinkansen to Hiroshima and the Miyajima ferry. Kansai WIDE stops at Okayama.
Japan Rail Pass
Kansai WIDE doesn't cover Tokyo–Kyoto. If you're coming from Tokyo, add the Tokyo round trip to your Kansai fares and compare the total with a JR Pass.

How to collect it and reserve seats
Bring your passport and the same card
For an online purchase you need the reservation number, the 4-digit ID you set, the credit card you paid with and your passport.
Collect the pass at a machine or ticket office
Machines need a passport with an IC chip. Without one, go to the ticket office.
Reserve seats before you board
Do it at a ticket machine or office, or online if you bought online. From the 7th reservation, JR West says you must use a ticket office.
Show the pass at the gate
Keep your passport on you: staff may ask to see it.
What if…?
…I want to change the start date?
You can't once the pass is issued. Start date, length and type are fixed after exchange.
…a train is cancelled during my pass?
The validity isn't extended. Refunds are only possible before use, at JR exchange counters in Japan, minus 10% (at least ¥220).
…I have a big suitcase on the Shinkansen?
Bags of more than 160 cm and up to 250 cm (three sides added up) need a seat with an oversized baggage area on the Sanyo Shinkansen. Reserve one in advance.
Oversized luggage rules →Day trips it's good for
Kinosaki Onsen
An onsen town of public baths. JR West lists it as a pass destination. Limited expresses run there from Kyoto, Osaka, Sannomiya and Himeji, and all of them need a seat reservation.
Amanohashidate
One of Japan's classic views, a pine-covered sandbar. The Kyoto Tango Railway stretch is inside the pass area on JR West's map.
Himeji Castle
Himeji is on the Shin-Osaka–Okayama Shinkansen, which the pass covers.
Koyasan
Reached on the private Nankai Koya Line and the Koyasan cable car, which this pass doesn't cover.
What we checked
JR West's Kansai WIDE Area Pass page: ¥12,000 / ¥6,000 for 5 days, Shinkansen Shin-Osaka–Okayama, HARUKA, KUROSHIO, KONOTORI and SUPER HAKUTO named, JR West and JR Shikoku local lines, refund fee 10% (minimum ¥220). The page says its information is current as of 1 August 2024.
The same page lists Okayama, Takamatsu, Kinosaki Onsen, Amanohashidate, Tottori and Shirahama as destinations. Its area map marks the Sanyo Shinkansen section "Including NOZOMI and MIZUHO" and shows the Kyoto Tango Railway to Amanohashidate inside the area.
JR West's pass list still shows the Kansai WIDE Area Pass. The Kansai Area Pass is gone from it (sales ended 30 September 2026).
We didn't buy or collect a pass, so the pickup screens above come from JR West's instructions.
Still deciding?
Write down your long trips first. Add up the fares for your long trips and the airport express. If they come to more than ¥12,000 within 5 days, the pass is worth it. With no long trip, stay on ICOCA.
