Big Luggage on the Shinkansen (2026): When You Must Book a Seat

Travelling with a big suitcase? Add up its height, width and depth. If the total is 161 to 250 cm and you ride the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu or Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen (Tokyo–Osaka–Hakata–Kagoshima, Nagasaki), book a seat with an oversized baggage area. It costs nothing extra.

Board without one and you pay ¥1,000. On the lines from Tokyo to Sendai, Nagano, Kanazawa and Niigata there is nothing to book. We read the JR Group's official rules on 6 November 2026.

What if I board without a luggage booking?

You pay a ¥1,000 carry-on oversized baggage fee. The conductor assigns a place for the bag, and if the train is full you may be asked to take a later one. You cannot take the bag into a non-reserved car: the oversized space is only for passengers with a reserved luggage seat.

Missed your train with a luggage seat? You cannot use a non-reserved car with the bag. Buy a new reserved luggage seat on the next train.
