Tokyo to Sendai by Shinkansen (2026): Price, Time and How to Book
Tokyo to Sendai is one of the easiest Shinkansen trips from the capital. Take the Hayabusa: 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 38 minutes in the November 2026 timetable. Every seat on it is reserved, so book before you board.
A reserved seat costs ¥11,630 after JR East raised fares in March 2026. For a simple return, neither the JR Pass nor the JR EAST PASS pays off. We checked timetables and fares on JR East's official pages on 6 November 2026.

Hayabusa or Yamabiko: which train should I take?
Hayabusa
1h30 to 1h38 in the November 2026 timetable. All cars are reserved, so a seat booking is required.
Yamabiko
1h46 to 2h24, depending on how many stops it makes. Some cars are non-reserved, so you can board with a non-reserved ticket and take any free seat.
Nasuno
Runs only part of the way (to Nasushiobara in the November 2026 weekday timetable), so it is not an option for Sendai.
Some Hayabusa trains run coupled to a Komachi (to Akita). The two halves split at Morioka, well after Sendai, so either half gets you to Sendai. Check the car number on your ticket.
How far in advance should I book?
Seats open at 10:00 Japan time, one month before travel, on JR-EAST Train Reservation, at station machines and at ticket offices. The November 2026 weekday timetable lists 56 Hayabusa departures from Tokyo, so there are many trains to choose from.

eki-net's Shinkansen e-ticket price table (purchases from 14 March 2026): Tokyo–Sendai Hayabusa ¥11,430 (fare ¥6,270 + express fee ¥5,160). The e-ticket express fee is ¥200 less than a paper ticket's, so a regular reserved ticket is ¥11,630.
Is the JR Pass or the JR EAST PASS worth it for Sendai?
For Tokyo–Sendai and back, no. A return is ¥23,260. The cheapest pass that covers it, the JR EAST PASS, is ¥35,000 for 5 days. A pass starts to pay off only if you go further north.
Is there a cheaper way to Sendai?
Highway bus
Highway buses run from Tokyo to Sendai. They are slower than the Shinkansen; compare fares and times on the bus operators' sites.
Yamabiko non-reserved
A non-reserved ticket costs less than a Hayabusa reserved seat, but no seat is guaranteed.
Agency ticket
If JR East's site rejects your card, an agency sells the same train in your currency, at a price the agency sets. Compare it with JR East's ¥11,430 e-ticket.

…I miss my Hayabusa?
With a regular ticket you can take a non-reserved seat on a later train the same day, which means a Yamabiko, or change to a standing place on a later Hayabusa (JR East's rule for all-reserved trains). Discount e-tickets have their own conditions, so check them when you book.
…I have a big suitcase?
JR East lines have no oversized-baggage booking. Bags go in the luggage area for free if there is space, and some trains have no such area. Big luggage on the Shinkansen →
…the site rejects my card?
Try another card, or buy at a station ticket machine after you arrive. An agency is the last resort.
