JR EAST PASS (2026): The New All-Area Pass, Prices and Is It Worth It

If you're heading north from Tokyo to Sendai, Aomori, Akita, Nagano or Niigata, the JR EAST PASS is cheaper once your train tickets within 5 days would add up to more than ¥35,000. JR East's own example, Narita Airport to Sendai and Shin-Aomori, comes to ¥52,000. If your trip also includes Kyoto or Osaka, this pass doesn't go there, so compare the nationwide JR Pass.

In March 2026 JR East replaced its two regional passes (Tohoku area, and Nagano–Niigata area) with this single pass: ¥35,000 for 5 consecutive days or ¥50,000 for 10. We read JR East's official pages on 6 November 2026.

Want the pass sorted before you fly? Buy a voucher and collect the pass in Japan with your passport. JR EAST Travel Service Centers, including the ones at Narita and Haneda airports, sell the pass too.

What changed in 2026?

Until 13 March 2026
JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area), 5 days ¥30,000, and JR EAST PASS (Nagano, Niigata area), sold separately
From 14 March 2026
One JR EAST PASS for all JR East lines, 5 or 10 daysOld passes bought before then stayed valid until they expired.

So older blog posts that compare "Tohoku vs Nagano–Niigata" are out of date. There's now one product. Some agency listings still use the old "Tohoku area" name in their web address; check the product page says 5 or 10 days at ¥35,000 / ¥50,000.

Is the JR EAST PASS worth it?

JR East's own example: Narita Airport to Tokyo by N'EX, then the Tohoku Shinkansen to Sendai and on to Shin-Aomori, ordinary reserved seats, adds up to ¥52,000, it says, against ¥35,000 for the 5-day pass.

JR East's example route in single tickets
¥52,000Narita Airport → Tokyo by N'EX, then Tokyo → Sendai → Shin-Aomori by Tohoku Shinkansen, ordinary reserved seats.
Narita Airport → Tokyo by N'EX
¥3,140
JR EAST PASS, 5 days
¥35,000: ¥17,000 less than the example

For your own plan, look up the single-ticket price of each long leg with a JR fare search and add them up. If the total passes ¥35,000 within 5 days, the 5-day pass is cheaper. The 10-day pass (¥50,000) needs a total above ¥50,000 within its 10 days; JR East's example route on its own comes to ¥52,000.

How to collect it and reserve seats

Bring the original passport

A copy won't do, and the pass user must be there: family members can't collect it for you.

Collect at a machine with a passport reader or a Travel Service Center

Passport-reader machines are only at designated stations; JR East lists them on its How to Buy page.

Reserve Shinkansen seats

Seats go on sale at 10:00 Japan time one month before the train. Online, a pass holder can hold up to 15 reservations including the pass itself; collect tickets at the station to free up the limit.

Booking seats on your phone at the platform needs data. A Japan eSIM set up before you fly is the simplest fix.

Still deciding?

Count your long Shinkansen legs from Tokyo. If they add up to more than ¥35,000 within 5 days, the JR EAST PASS is cheaper. JR East's own example, Narita Airport to Tokyo, Sendai and Shin-Aomori, comes to ¥52,000. If Kyoto is on the list too, run the JR Pass numbers first.
