Nikko Day Trip from Tokyo (2026): Train, NIKKO PASS and a Day Plan

Nikko works as a day trip if you leave Asakusa early in the morning. The Tobu limited express takes about 1 hour 50 minutes to Tobu-Nikko, and Toshogu Shrine is a short bus ride from the station. Buy the 2-day NIKKO PASS World Heritage Area (¥3,000, foreign visitors) for the return train and local buses; add the limited express fee on top.

On 6 November 2026 we read the pass pages on Tobu Railway's official site and the hours and fees on Toshogu's official site. From November to March Toshogu closes at 16:00, so start early.

Which train should I take to Nikko?

Most visitors

Tobu from Asakusa

Limited express about 1 h 50 min; without the limited express you change trains on the way and the trip takes longer. Also stops at Tokyo Skytree Station. The NIKKO PASS covers the base fare.

JR Tokyo Wide Pass

JR–Tobu limited express from Shinjuku

About 2 hours, no change. Covered by the JR Tokyo Wide Pass (¥16,000, 3 days). JR Tokyo Wide Pass →

JR Pass holders

Shinkansen + JR Nikko Line

Shinkansen to Utsunomiya, then the JR Nikko Line, about 45 min, to JR Nikko Station. Both are JR lines, so the Japan Rail Pass covers the whole route.

Is the NIKKO PASS worth it?

It bundles the Asakusa return with the Tobu buses between the station, Toshogu and the shrines, so you don't buy separate tickets for each ride. Tobu's pass page doesn't give a regular-fare comparison, so check the regular return fare on Tobu's site if you want to compare. It does not include the limited express fee, Toshogu admission or the SPACIA X special seats.

A day plan that works

  1. Early morningLimited express from Asakusa, with the seat reserved ahead (see below).
  2. MorningTobu-Nikko Station. Tobu bus to the shrine area.
  3. Late morningShinkyo Bridge, then Toshogu: Yomeimon gate, the Sleeping Cat and Ieyasu's tomb.
  4. MiddayLunch: yuba (tofu skin) is the local dish.
  5. AfternoonRinnoji temple and Futarasan shrine next door (not part of the Toshogu ticket), or bus up to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls (All Area pass).
  6. Late afternoonTrain back to Asakusa. From November to March Toshogu closes at 16:00.
The Akechidaira Ropeway is closed from 16 Jan 2026 to 31 Aug 2027 (it may be extended), so the classic view over Kegon Falls from the ropeway isn't possible.

Do I need to book Toshogu?

No. Buy at the gate on the day. The shrine ticket (¥1,600 adults, ¥550 children) covers the main buildings from Omotemon gate to the Okumiya tomb, including the Sleeping Cat and the Crying Dragon hall. A set with the Treasure Museum is ¥2,400. An English audio guide is ¥500.

How do I do it, step by step?

  1. Get the NIKKO PASS Online from Tobu before you go, or at Tobu Tourist Information Center Asakusa.
  2. Reserve the limited express Buy the limited express ticket separately on Tobu's site or at the station. Without it you ride slower trains and change on the way.
  3. Board at Asakusa or Tokyo Skytree Check the destination on the ticket and the platform sign: your train must go to Tobu-Nikko.
You'll want data for bus times in Nikko. A Japan eSIM is set up before you fly.

  4. Ride the Tobu bus to the shrines The pass covers the Tobu buses around the World Heritage sites. Have it ready on your phone and follow the instructions that come with it.

What if…?

…I go in autumn?

The autumn-leaf season brings the biggest crowds. Roads to Lake Chuzenji get very slow, and Tobu says it does not refund for traffic delays. If you're heading up to the lake, leave plenty of time for the bus back.

…I arrive after 15:00 in winter?

From November to March Toshogu entry ends at 15:30. Go straight there from the station.

…I'd rather not plan anything?

A day tour from Tokyo covers the transport and the main sights; check whether Kegon Falls and admission are included. Compare its price with the pass plus the limited express fee.

What we checked

Official pages read on 6 Nov 2026

Tobu NIKKO PASS pages: World Heritage Area ¥3,000 (2 days), All Area ¥8,000 (4 days); foreign visitors only; limited express fee and admissions not included; Akechidaira Ropeway closed 16 Jan 2026 – 31 Aug 2027.

Toshogu fees and hours page: ¥1,600 / ¥550; 9:00–17:00 Apr–Oct, 9:00–16:00 Nov–Mar; entry ends 30 min before.

Toshogu access page: Tobu limited express about 1 h 50 min, JR from Shinjuku about 2 h, JR Nikko Line about 45 min. It also lists a Tobu rapid train (about 2 h 5 min), which news reports say was discontinued in 2017, so we do not rely on it.

JR East Tokyo Wide Pass page (read via a text reader): ¥16,000, covers the JR–Tobu through limited expresses.

Staying overnight?

With a night at Kinugawa Onsen or Okunikko you can see Lake Chuzenji without rushing. The 4-day All Area pass covers the lake buses and the cruise.
