Nikko: What to Book Before You Go (2026)
Nikko is about two hours north of Tokyo. Nothing in town needs a reservation: you buy Toshogu tickets at the gate. What you do decide in advance is the train and the pass.
From Tokyo, the simplest answer is the Tobu line from Asakusa with a NIKKO PASS. The ¥3,000 World Heritage Area pass covers the shrines; the ¥8,000 All Area pass only pays off if you go up to Lake Chuzenji. We read the official pages for the prices below on 6 November 2026.

What do you need to book before you go to Nikko?
Which train should you take from Tokyo to Nikko?
Tobu from Asakusa
Limited express (SPACIA X, Kegon) about 1 h 50 min, also boarding at Tokyo Skytree station. Regular Tobu trains need no seat fee but involve a change on the way and take longer. Works with the NIKKO PASS.
Shinkansen + JR Nikko Line
Tohoku Shinkansen to Utsunomiya, then the JR Nikko Line, about 45 min. Both are JR lines, so the JR Pass covers them.
JR limited express Nikko
About 2 h, through-running onto Tobu tracks. The JR Tokyo Wide Pass (¥16,000, 3 days) covers it.
Which NIKKO PASS should you buy?
Verdict: a day of shrines only is the World Heritage pass. Adding Kegon Falls and the lake makes the All Area pass worth considering, but look up the Tobu bus fare up to the lake and add up your rides before you pay ¥8,000. Both passes went up a lot in April 2025 (from ¥2,120 and ¥4,780).

When should you visit Toshogu?
From November to March the shrine closes at 16:00 and the gate stops selling at 15:30. Arrive by early afternoon. The shrine-only ticket (¥1,600) covers the Yomeimon gate, the Sleeping Cat and the Okumiya; the set with the Treasure Museum is ¥2,400.
Rinnoji Temple next door has its own admission: Sanbutsudo ¥400, Sanbutsudo + Taiyuin ¥900. Toshogu tickets and hours →
Is Kegon Falls worth the trip up?
Yes, if you have a full day. The elevator takes you 100 m down to the base viewing deck in about a minute (¥600 return, first come first served). In the October–November foliage season Tobu warns of heavy traffic between Tobu-Nikko Station and Lake Chuzenji: buses can run more than two hours late, and there are no refunds for delays caused by traffic.
The Akechidaira Ropeway, the usual viewpoint over the falls, is closed from 16 January 2026 to 31 August 2027.
What the official pages said on Nov 6, 2026
Tobu listed the NIKKO PASS World Heritage Area at ¥3,000 (2 days) and All Area at ¥8,000 (4 days), foreign visitors only, limited express fees not included.
Tobu's pass pages said the Akechidaira Ropeway is closed from 16 January 2026 to 31 August 2027, possibly longer.
Toshogu listed ¥1,600 for the shrine, ¥2,400 with the Treasure Museum, 9:00–16:00 from November to March and 9:00–17:00 from April to October.
The Kegon Falls elevator page listed ¥600 for adults, 8:00–17:00 (March–November) and 9:00–16:30 (December–February).
Toshogu's access page gave about 1 h 50 min by Tobu limited express and about 45 min on the JR Nikko Line. This page doesn't quote limited express fees or bus fares; check them with Tobu before you go. Rinnoji's admission page listed Sanbutsudo ¥400 and the Sanbutsudo + Taiyuin set ¥900.
What if…?
…the limited express is full?
Take regular Tobu trains. They need no seat reservation and the NIKKO PASS covers the fare, but there is no direct train without the limited express: you change on the way, so look up the connection in a journey planner.
…I arrive at Toshogu after 15:30 in winter?
The gate has stopped selling. Walk to Shinkyo Bridge and the town, and come back the next morning at 9:00.
…the road to Lake Chuzenji is jammed?
Go up early in the morning, or skip the lake on autumn weekends and stay in the shrine area.
…I have a JR Pass?
Take the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya and the JR Nikko Line. Both are JR lines, so the JR Pass covers them and you only pay bus fares in town. Is the JR Pass worth it? →
