Nikko Toshogu Tickets (2026): ¥1,600 Entry, Opening Hours, and Whether to Add the Museum
You're planning a day trip to Nikko and want to know what Toshogu costs and when to arrive. Entry is ¥1,600 for adults and high school students. You buy at the gate; there are no time slots or reservations.
The thing to plan around is the clock. From November to March the shrine closes at 16:00, and entry stops 30 minutes earlier. Nikko is about two hours from Tokyo, so leave in the morning.

What does the ¥1,600 ticket cover?
One ticket gets you the main shrine grounds: everything from the Omotemon gate through Yomeimon, the worship hall, the east corridor with the Sleeping Cat carving, the Okumiya (Ieyasu's tomb), and the Honjido hall with the Crying Dragon ceiling. The shrine notes that parts can be closed for festivals or repairs.
Toshogu is one of several sites in Nikko's World Heritage area. Futarasan Shrine and Rinnoji Temple are next door, and the Toshogu ticket doesn't cover them. Rinnoji sells its own tickets: for example ¥400 for the Sanbutsudo hall and ¥550 for Taiyuin.
When is Toshogu open, and when should you arrive?
The ticket area runs all the way to the Okumiya, so leave time for the walk there. In winter, if you also want Kegon Falls or Lake Chuzenji, do the shrine first: ticket sales end at 15:30.
How to buy your ticket
- Buy at the shrine's ticket window on arrival. No reservation is needed for individual visitors (groups of 35+ pay a group rate).
- Choose shrine only, or the shrine + Treasure Museum set. The set is ¥2,400 for adults. The official page doesn't list payment methods, so bring yen in cash.
- Rent the audio guide if you want the stories behind the carvings. ¥500 a day, right after you pass the Omotemon gate. Rental runs 9:00–16:00 (Apr–Oct) or 9:00–15:00 (Nov–Mar).Want the ticket sorted before you leave Tokyo? The shrine's own homepage links to an advance ticket on KKday, and Klook sells a voucher too. Day tour or on your own?
On your own is cheaper and lets you choose your pace. A tour is worth it if you want Toshogu, Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji in one day without working out buses up the mountain road. Check whether the shrine ticket is included in the tour you pick.
