Sendai: What to Book Before You Go (2026)
Sendai is the easiest trip into Tohoku: about 1½ hours from Tokyo on the Hayabusa, which is all reserved seats. Book that seat; almost nothing in the city itself needs a reservation.
On passes, the JR EAST PASS (¥35,000 for 5 days) does not pay off for a Tokyo–Sendai return alone, which costs ¥23,260. It can pay off once you go further: JR East's own example (Narita Express, Tokyo–Sendai and Sendai–Shin-Aomori) costs ¥52,000 in single tickets. We read the official pages for the prices below on 6 November 2026.

What do you need to book before you go to Sendai?
How do you book the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sendai?
The Tohoku Shinkansen is run by JR East, so smartEX (the Tokaido line app) doesn't work here. Book on JR East's own site, at a station, or through an agency.
JR East / station

Verdict: for Tokyo–Sendai and back, buy single tickets. If you also go to Aomori, Morioka, Nikko or Narita, add up those fares and compare with ¥35,000. For a trip that stays in JR East's area, this pass costs less than the nationwide JR Pass (¥50,000 for 7 days).

How do you get around Sendai?
The Loople Sendai retro bus does a one-way loop from Sendai Station past Zuihoden (4th stop) and the Sendai Castle site (6th stop). Fares went up on 1 October 2026.

How do you get from Sendai Airport to the city?
The Sendai Airport Access Line runs to Sendai Station in 24–31 minutes, two or three trains an hour, from 5:31 to 23:23. ¥680 by ticket or ¥672 with an IC card. The JR EAST PASS covers it.
What the official pages said on Nov 6, 2026
JR East's November 2026 timetable showed Hayabusa Tokyo–Sendai at 1 h 30 – 1 h 38 (all reserved) and Yamabiko at 1 h 46 – 2 h 24. The fare rose to ¥6,270 on 14 March 2026; eki-net's price table puts the Hayabusa reserved-seat fee at ¥5,360 on a regular ticket (¥200 less as an e-ticket), so ¥11,630 in total.
JR East listed the JR EAST PASS at ¥35,000 (5 days) and ¥50,000 (10 days).
Loople Sendai listed ¥300 a ride, ¥700 for the 1-day pass and ¥1,000 with the subway, after a revision announced for 1 October 2026.
Zuihoden listed ¥570; the Matsushima cruise ¥1,500 for 50 minutes; the Sendai Airport Access Line ¥680 (IC ¥672).
The Sendai Tanabata site said the festival is held 6–8 August.
What if…?
…the Hayabusa is full?
Try a Yamabiko: slower, but with unreserved cars. Or travel an hour earlier or later.
…I miss the last Loople bus?
Use the Tozai subway line (International Center station for the castle side) or a taxi.
…the Matsushima boat is cancelled for weather?
Walk to Godaido and Zuiganji instead; neither depends on the boats.
…I'm only in Sendai for a day?
Hayabusa up in the morning, Loople loop, gyutan (beef tongue) lunch, back in the evening.

Going further north?
Sendai works as a day trip from Tokyo, but it's a better first stop on a Tohoku route. Book the Hayabusa, decide on the JR EAST PASS by adding up your trains, and start the Loople loop at 9:00.
