Amanohashidate and Ine Day Trip from Kyoto or Osaka (2026): Trains, the 2-Day Free Pass, or a Tour?
Amanohashidate and Ine are on the Sea of Japan coast, about two hours from Kyoto each way. You can do both in one day by train and local bus, but it's a long day and the buses don't take IC cards. If you want both places without watching timetables, a day tour from Kyoto or Osaka is the honest easier option.
On your own, the ¥3,500 two-day free pass covers the local bus, boats and cable car, and pays off only if you use nearly all of them.

How do you get to Amanohashidate from Kyoto or Osaka?
Amanohashidate Station is on the Kyoto Tango Railway, a private line. Through trains from Kyoto start on JR and continue onto it, so part of the fare is outside JR.
Limited Express Hashidate
Kyoto → Amanohashidate with no change. JR West lists only five numbered Hashidate trains in each direction, so check the timetable the night before.
Konotori + Tango Railway
Osaka → Fukuchiyama by JR limited express, then Kyoto Tango Railway. Check the connection at Fukuchiyama before you set off.
Highway bus
Tankai runs direct buses every day: six round trips from Kyoto Station (about 2 h) and a few from Osaka (about 160 min). Adults pay ¥3,400–3,900 one way depending on the date; booking online keeps you a seat and takes 2% off.
Getting around Amanohashidate and Ine
Amanohashidate is a 3.6 km pine-covered sandbar across a bay. The classic view is from Kasamatsu Park on the north side, where you bend over and look at it upside down through your legs ("matanozoki"). Ine, with its boat houses built over the water, is further up the coast by bus.
Is the Tango Amanohashidate Ine Free Pass worth it?
The free pass costs ¥3,500 (child ¥1,750) and is valid for 2 days. It covers local buses in Miyazu, Ine, Kyotango and Yosano, the Amanohashidate boats, the Ine Bay boat, the Kasamatsu cable car and lift, and the Nariai-ji mountain bus (temple entry extra).
The bus company sells these tickets at the piers and at Fuchu station, and names KKday as its online seller for the free pass and two of the combo tickets.

A one-day Amanohashidate and Ine plan by train
This only works with an early start from Kyoto. The Ine bus runs roughly once an hour, with some trips on weekdays or holidays only, so check the Hashidate, highway bus and Tankai bus timetables for your date and fit the day around them.

Day tour from Kyoto or Osaka
A coach handles the long drive and the Ine leg, which is the hard part by public transport. Check whether the Ine boat and the cable car are included before you book.

Train fare plus ¥3,500 for the pass (or a cheaper combo). Best if you stay a night and use the second day.
Kansai Wide Area Pass
¥12,000 for 5 days. JR West lists Amanohashidate among its destinations, but its English page doesn't say whether the Kyoto Tango Railway section is included, so ask at a JR ticket office first.

Common problems
My Suica doesn't work on the bus.
Correct: IC cards aren't accepted on Tankai buses. Pay cash, tap a contactless credit card, or use the free pass.
The lift is closed.
In winter the lift runs only on weekends and holidays (Jan 6 to the end of February) and shuts in bad weather. The cable car runs all year.
I missed the last Ine boat.
The last departure is 16:00. Plan Ine before mid-afternoon; the boat houses are also good from the shore.
Before you go
Start early, carry cash or a contactless card for the bus, and decide on the free pass only after counting your rides. If you'd rather not juggle timetables, take a tour.
