Kyoto: What to Book Before You Go (2026)
Kyoto looks like a city of reservations, but most of it isn't. Kiyomizu-dera, Fushimi Inari and the Imperial Palace need no booking at all. The few things worth reserving are the Sagano Romantic Train, the Gion Corner evening show, and kimono or tea ceremony slots.
The bigger question is how to move around. Plan by area and use trains where you can. We read the official pages for the prices below on 7 November 2026.

Bus or subway: which pass do you need in Kyoto?
City buses reach most temples. The subway has only two lines. For the outer areas (Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, Uji), JR or private railways go direct, so add up the rides you plan before buying a pass.

What if…?
…the Sagano train is sold out online?
Stations sell same-day tickets while seats last. Or skip it and walk the Arashiyama riverside instead.
Sagano train on Klook ↗…the bus is too full to board?
Take the subway or JR as far as you can and walk the last part. Gion and Higashiyama are walkable from Keihan stations.
…I have a JR Pass?
Use it for HARUKA, JR to Inari, Arashiyama (Saga-Arashiyama) and Nara. It does not work on city buses or the subway. Is the JR Pass worth it? →
…my hotel charges a tax I didn't expect?
That is the city accommodation tax. It is per person per night and set by the room price.
Plan by area, not by list
Group your days: Higashiyama and Gion, Arashiyama, Fushimi and Uji, then the centre. Book the Sagano train and any evening show first. Everything else can wait until you arrive.
