Seeing a Maiko in Gion (2026-27): Gion Corner Show, Miyako Odori Tickets, and Maiko Dinners
You want to see a maiko (an apprentice geiko) in Kyoto, but not by waiting on a street corner with a camera. The good news is that there are proper ways to do it, and the easiest to book is Gion Corner's evening show: about 50 minutes, including a Kyomai dance generally performed by maiko from Gion Kobu, for ¥5,500.
If you're in Kyoto in April, the Miyako Odori is the big one: a full stage show by Gion Kobu's geiko and maiko, all month. If you want to talk with a maiko, look at maiko dinners sold through agencies, and check the price and what's included on each listing.

What are the ways to see a maiko in Kyoto?
Gion Corner
A sampler of seven arts: tea ceremony, ikebana, koto, bugaku, kyogen, bunraku or noh (by season) and a Kyomai dance by maiko. The winter programme drops bunraku and noh. About 50 minutes. Booked on the official site, or at the window on the day if seats are left.
Miyako Odori
Gion Kobu's spring dance by geiko and maiko at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, three shows a day, starting 12:30, 14:30 and 16:30. Second-class seats start at ¥5,000.
Maiko dinner or tea party
A meal with a maiko, sold through agencies. Check what each listing includes (a dance, conversation, an interpreter, photos) and the price before you pay.
Our verdict: for most visitors, Gion Corner is enough. Pick the Miyako Odori if you're there in April, and a dinner only if talking with a maiko is the point of your trip.
How do you book Gion Corner?
- Check the calendar first. From December 1 to March 11, shows run only Tuesday to Friday (not on holidays). Some days are closed: Jul 16, Aug 16, Dec 26 – Jan 4, Feb 11 and 23.
- Book a reserved seat on the official site. Choose 18:00 or 19:00 and a seat type. Credit cards and electronic payments are accepted.
- Or buy at the window on the day. Seats are sold at the window on the day while they last. In busy seasons, booking ahead is the safer choice.
- Arrive a little early. The theatre is at 570-2 Gionmachi Minamigawa, a 5-minute walk from Keihan Gion-Shijo Station or the Gion bus stop.Need data for the map and your e-ticket? A Japan eSIM is the easy fix.Compare Japan eSIMs on Klook ↗
Is the premium seat worth it? It's ¥1,100 more than a standard adult seat. The tea-and-sweets seat (¥6,050) is the better upgrade if you've never tried matcha. Note that neither has an age discount.
In the winter programme, you can take a photo with a maiko after the show.
Miyako Odori 2027: dates, prices and when tickets go on sale
Tickets are sold on the official online ticket site, and the organisers suggest registering as a member there before the sale opens. They also take phone orders on 075-541-3391 (weekdays 10:00–17:00). Kyoto's other geisha districts hold their own dances too, but we haven't checked their 2027 dates yet.
What we checked on Nov 6, 2026
Gion Corner's English page listed the 18:00 and 19:00 shows, the winter Tuesday–Friday schedule (Dec 1 – Mar 11), the prices above and the closed days.
The Miyako Odori site showed the 2027 outline (information as of October 2026): Apr 1–30, three shows a day, the four seat prices and sales from Jan 6, 2027 at 10:00.
We don't quote maiko dinner prices: each agency listing sets its own.
Is a maiko dinner worth the money?
Of the options here, it's the one where a maiko joins your table. What you get differs by listing, so compare the price with a Gion Corner seat and check what's included before you book.

Geiko and maiko are not mascots, as the Kyoto City Tourism Association's notice for Gion puts it. It asks visitors not to stop, touch, follow or photograph walking geiko and maiko without permission, and not to enter private land. Where a sign asks you not to enter a lane or not to take photos, follow it.
- Don't stop a maiko, follow her, touch her, or photograph her without permission.
- Don't take photos in lanes marked as private roads.
- If you want a photo with a maiko, the Gion Corner winter programme offers one after the show. For dinners, check the listing.
- Keep your voice down in the side streets: people live there.
