Fushimi Inari (2026): No Ticket Needed, How Far to Hike, and the Rules
Fushimi Inari Taisha is the shrine with around 10,000 vermilion torii gates along the paths of Mount Inari. There's nothing to book: you just walk in, and the grounds have no closing time.
How far you go is up to you. The famous Senbon Torii are near the bottom, and the full loop over the mountain is about 4 km. You can turn back at any point. JR Inari Station, right at the gate, is 5 minutes from Kyoto Station.

When should you go?
The shrine doesn't publish crowd numbers, so we can't tell you which hour is quietest. These are the fixed times to plan around.
How far should you walk, and how long does it take?
Climbing the mountain and visiting its shrines along the way is called "Oyama-meguri" (お山めぐり). Kyoto City's official tourism site gives the full loop as about 4 km and about 2 hours. You can turn back at any point.

The full loop over the summit (Ichinomine, 233 m)
About 4 km and about 2 hours through the forest, via the highest peak. Wear proper shoes.
Wearing a kimono? The full loop is about 4 km of mountain path, so think about your footwear before you go beyond the lower gates. Kimono rental in Kyoto →
What we checked on Nov 6, 2026
The shrine's access page gave JR Inari Station as "right there" (5 minutes from Kyoto Station), Keihan Fushimi-Inari as 5 minutes east on foot, and the City Bus Minami 5 stop as a 7-minute walk.
The prayer page gave the prayer service as 8:30–16:30, booked by about 16:00, every day of the year.
The FAQ said there are around 10,000 torii along the mountain paths. The map page gave Mount Inari's height as 233 m.
The shrine's pages don't give opening hours, an admission fee or walking times. On Nov 7, 2026, Kyoto City's official tourism site (Kyoto Kanko Navi) listed no gate closing, open every day, the amulet counter at 8:00–18:00 and the Oyama-meguri loop as about 4 km and about 2 hours. It listed no fee.
Your visit, step by step
- Take the JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station to Inari. About 5 minutes. The shrine's gate is across the road. Use an IC card such as ICOCA or Suica.Need data for maps on the mountain? A Japan eSIM is the easy fix.Compare Japan eSIMs on Klook ↗
- Pass the Romon gate and the main hall, then follow the signs to Senbon Torii. Take your photos here quickly, without stopping in the narrow rows.
- Keep climbing to Yotsutsuji. Eating is only allowed in the designated rest areas, not while walking.
- Decide: on to the summit or back down. The paths go on to the peaks from here. You can turn back at any point.
What does the shrine ask visitors not to do?
The shrine lists these as prohibited (effective January 1, 2022). Staff will ask you to leave if you don't follow them.
- Eating or drinking outside the free rest areas (no eating while walking or standing)
- Smoking or using fire
- Flying drones
- Photography that blocks the narrow paths, and commercial shoots
- Walking the grounds in a wedding dress or clothing unsuitable for worship
- Entering fenced or closed-off areas, climbing lanterns, damaging torii or trees
- Walking pets (assistance dogs allowed), feeding wild animals
- Leaving rubbish, bottles or cans
Is a guided tour worth it?
There's no ticket to buy and the station is at the gate, so you don't need a tour to visit. A guide adds the stories behind the torii, the fox statues and the stone mounds (お塚) that you'll otherwise walk past.
