Kobe: What to Book Before You Go (2026)
Most people come to Kobe for two things: a Kobe beef meal and the harbour. The meal is the one thing worth booking. The Kobe Port Tower now sells date-and-time tickets, so pick a slot if you want sunset.
Kobe is a short train ride from Osaka, so it works as a half day or paired with Himeji Castle. We read the official pages for the prices below on 7 November 2026.

How do you know it's real Kobe beef?
"Kobe beef" is a registered brand with strict rules. A menu that says "wagyu" or "Kobe-style" is not necessarily Kobe beef. The council that runs the brand lists the rules and registered stores on its site.
- Tajima cattle lineage, born and raised in Hyogo Prefecture.
- Marbling score BMS No. 6 or higher, yield grade A or B, carcass weight up to 499.9 kg.
- Stamped with the Nojigiku (wild chrysanthemum) mark and a 10-digit ID you can look up.
- Registered restaurants display a certificate and a bronze statuette.
Should you book Kobe beef direct or through an agency?
You can contact registered restaurants directly; the council's site lists them. Compare the restaurant's own price with any agency set before you pay. An agency helps when you can't book in Japanese or want the set menu prepaid.

How do you get to Kobe from Osaka or Kyoto?
JR Special Rapid
Osaka – Sannomiya ¥420. Covered by the JR Pass.
Hankyu or Hanshin
Both run from Osaka-umeda to Kobe-Sannomiya. Not covered by the JR Pass.
JR Special Rapid
Kyoto – Sannomiya, no change.
Shin-Kobe
About 12 min from Shin-Osaka. The ropeway's base station is about 5 min on foot; Sannomiya is one subway stop.

Can you do Kobe and Himeji in one day?
Yes. Both are on the same JR line west of Osaka. Do Himeji Castle in the morning (¥2,500 adults, 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:00, 30-minute timed slots online), then stop in Kobe on the way back for the harbour and dinner.

What the official pages said on Nov 7, 2026
The Kobe Beef council listed the brand rules (Tajima lineage, born in Hyogo, BMS No. 6+, grade A or B, up to 499.9 kg, Nojigiku stamp, 10-digit ID) and said registered stores display a certificate and bronze statuette.
Kobe Port Tower listed ¥1,200 (observation + rooftop) and ¥1,000 (observation), 9:00–23:00 with last entry 22:30, and said date-and-time tickets are required.
Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens listed ¥2,500 return and ¥1,900 one way, a ¥2,000 night ticket (not in the summer or Christmas seasons), and about 5 minutes on foot from Shin-Kobe Station.
JR West's WEST QR Kansai Area Pass page listed ¥2,700 for 1 day, sold through overseas travel agencies, with Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, Himeji and Wakayama in the area. The KANSAI RAILWAY PASS LITE page listed ¥5,200 (2 days) and ¥6,500 (3 days), online sales only until 31 March 2027.
Himeji Castle listed ¥2,500 for adults 18 and over, 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:00.
JR West's fare table listed Osaka – Sannomiya at ¥420. The JR timetable showed a Nozomi leaving Shin-Osaka at 13:50 and reaching Shin-Kobe at 14:02. Local train times and Kobe beef meal prices were not confirmed on official pages, so this page does not give them.

…every Kobe beef dinner is full?
Try lunch instead and compare the set prices. Or look for a Kobe beef restaurant in Osaka and check the certificate.
…the Port Tower sunset slot is gone?
Go later. Night views last until the 22:30 last entry. Or see the harbour from Meriken Park for free.
…it's raining?
The rooftop deck may close. Buy the observation-only ticket (¥1,000), or spend the time at Nankinmachi and the covered shopping streets.
…I have a JR Pass?
Use JR to Sannomiya or the Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe. Hankyu and Hanshin are not covered. Is the JR Pass worth it? →

Reserve your Kobe beef meal and, if you care about sunset, a Port Tower slot. Nothing else in Kobe needs a reservation. With a free morning, add Himeji Castle first.
