How to Book Kobe Beef in Kobe (2026): Real Kobe Beef, Lunch vs Dinner, and Where to Reserve
You want to eat real Kobe beef in Kobe, and the menus all say "Kobe" or "wagyu". There's one simple test: the Kobe Beef association lists the restaurants it recommends, and genuine Kobe beef comes with a certificate number you can ask to see.
The verdict: pick a restaurant from the official guide, compare the lunch and dinner budgets it lists (lunch was the lower one in the listings we checked), and book a table as soon as your date is fixed. Booking through Klook or KKday is handy when the restaurant has no English form, but it isn't required.

What actually counts as Kobe beef?
"Kobe beef" is a certified brand, not a style. The Kobe Beef Marketing & Distribution Promotion Association, set up in 1983, decides what qualifies. Beef that doesn't meet its criteria can't be called Kobe beef, however good the wagyu.
Certified meat is stamped with a Japanese chrysanthemum (nojigiku) mark, and every animal has a 10-digit ID number on its ear tag from birth.
kobe-niku.jp/en (criteria page): Tajima lineage, born in Hyogo, BMS 6+, yield A or B, carcass 499.9 kg or less, nojigiku stamp, 10-digit ID.
kobe-niku.jp/en (association page): formed 1983, issues Kobe Beef certificates, bronze statuette at designated stores, links to the official restaurant guide kobebeef-org.jp.
How do you know a restaurant serves the real thing?
- Look the restaurant up on the official Kobe Beef Restaurant Guide (kobebeef-org.jp, switch to English).
- Registered stores display their registration certificate and the small bronze Kobe beef statue.
- Ask for the 10-digit ID of the animal you're eating, or to see the certificate.
- "Kobe-style", "wagyu" or "Japanese black beef" on a menu doesn't by itself mean certified Kobe beef. Check the restaurant on the guide.
The official guide says listings can change without notice, so confirm prices and opening hours with the restaurant itself.
Lunch or dinner: which is better value?
Compare them on the official guide: it lists a lunch budget and a dinner budget for each restaurant. In the listings we checked on Nov 7, 2026, the lunch budget was the lower one, sometimes by several price bands. Some restaurants don't open for lunch, so check that first.

How do you book a Kobe beef restaurant?
- Shortlist two or three restaurants from the official guide. The guide filters by area, cuisine and separate lunch and dinner budgets, and has a filter for English-speaking service.
- Check how each one takes bookings. It may be the restaurant's own web form, a phone call, or a listing on Klook or KKday.
- Book the course, not just a table, if the restaurant offers it. Set courses fix the price in advance. Read the cancellation rule before you confirm. If the restaurant only takes phone calls in Japanese, check whether it has a listing on Klook, where the course and price are shown in English.Book Kobe beef on Klook ↗
- Arrive on time and ask for the certificate. Ask to see the certificate or the beef's 10-digit ID.
Should you book through Klook or KKday, or directly?
Book directly when the restaurant has an English form: you see its own prices and rules. Use an agency when booking direct isn't possible in English, or when you want a prepaid set course. Agency prices and cancellation terms are set per listing, so compare them with the restaurant's own menu.
