Dazaifu and Yufuin from Fukuoka (2026): Trains, the Yufuin no Mori, and Whether to Do Both in One Day
Dazaifu is a half-day trip: a short Nishitetsu train ride from Tenjin, no booking needed, and the shrine is free. Yufuin is a full day on its own, about two hours each way, and JR Kyushu says its scenic Yufuin no Mori train is fully booked day after day.
Our verdict: do Dazaifu on your own and book Yufuin early. Doing both in one day only works smoothly on a bus tour. We read the train, shrine and museum pages on 6 November 2026; the figures below come from them.

Dazaifu, Yufuin, or both in one day?
The two places are in different directions. Dazaifu is just south-east of Fukuoka city. Yufuin is inland in Oita Prefecture, about two hours away by train or bus. There is no fast link between them.
Dazaifu only
Shrine, the approach street with its umegae-mochi shops, and the Kyushu National Museum. Back in Fukuoka by lunch or mid-afternoon.
Yufuin only
Lake Kinrin, the Yunotsubo street and a hot-spring bath. Two hours each way, so leave Hakata in the morning.
Both
A bus tour drives the road between them; check each itinerary for the order and the time at each stop. By public transport you go back through Fukuoka in between and need a booked seat to Yufuin.
How do you get to Dazaifu from Fukuoka?
Take the Nishitetsu train from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) station. A limited express reaches Nishitetsu Futsukaichi in 13 minutes. Change there to the short Dazaifu Line. No seat reservations exist on these trains; just tap an IC card or buy a ticket.
What does Dazaifu cost once you're there?
Go early if you can. Dazaifu Tenmangu says visitors typically arrive from 8:30, when morning prayers begin, and that the shrine is quieter at dusk or early in the morning.
How do you book the Yufuin no Mori train?
The Yufuin no Mori is JR Kyushu's resort train from Hakata to Yufuin. Every seat is reserved and JR Kyushu itself says seats are "consistently fully booked day after day". Treat a seat as something to book, not something to find on the day.
- Check the timetable for your date. Two Hakata–Yufuin round trips run a day, plus one to Beppu. As of January 2026, No. 1 left Hakata at 9:17 and reached Yufuin at 11:31. On some days only Nos. 1, 2, 5 and 6 run.
- Reserve a seat through JR Kyushu. Buy a ticket with seat reservation on JR Kyushu's online booking site or at a JR Kyushu ticket office. JR Kyushu's train page doesn't list the fare, so check it on the booking site.
- Or use a JR Kyushu Rail Pass. Both the All Kyushu and Northern Kyushu passes cover the Yufuin no Mori and the YUFU limited express. You still need a seat reservation. The Northern Kyushu pass is ¥15,000 for 3 days. Compare it with the fares you would actually pay; it is meant for trips that go further, such as to Kumamoto or Nagasaki.JR Kyushu Rail Pass on Klook ↗
- Have a plan B. If it's full, JR Kyushu suggests going via Kokura and Oita. The YUFU limited express runs on the same line, but JR Kyushu says it is just as busy. The Yufuin-go highway bus is the other option; it needs a seat reservation too.
Is the JR Kyushu Rail Pass worth it for Yufuin?
Honest answer: not for a Yufuin return alone. A round trip by highway bus is ¥6,500 at the regular fare (¥3,250 each way), well under the ¥15,000 pass. The pass makes sense when Yufuin is one stop on a wider Kyushu loop.

What the official pages said on Nov 6, 2026
Nishitetsu's sightseeing page gave the route to Dazaifu as a limited express from Fukuoka (Tenjin) to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi (13 minutes), then the Dazaifu Line. It did not list fares.
The Dazaifu Sansaku Kippu page listed ¥1,040 (paper) and ¥1,000 (digital) for adults from Fukuoka (Tenjin).
Dazaifu Tenmangu's FAQ said there is no entrance fee and gave the opening and closing times above.
The Kyushu National Museum's visit page listed 9:30–17:00, closed Mondays, and ¥700 for the permanent exhibition.
JR Kyushu's Yufuin no Mori page said all seats are reserved, two Hakata–Yufuin round trips run daily, and seats are fully booked day after day. Its Rail Pass page marked the train as covered by the All Kyushu and Northern Kyushu passes.
Checked on Nov 7, 2026: Nishitetsu's route search gave Tenjin–Dazaifu ¥480 and 28–29 minutes; the Yufuin-go page listed ¥3,250 (Fukuoka–Yufuin Ekimae), about 2 h 25 min from Tenjin, seats reserved, bookings from 8:00 one month before; the Tabito page listed ¥800 (¥780 by card or IC), about 40 minutes, no reservation.
What if…?
…the Yufuin no Mori is sold out?
Check the YUFU limited express on the same line (also covered by the pass), but JR Kyushu says it is fully booked day after day too. The other option is the Yufuin-go highway bus from Fukuoka; book its seat as well.
…I'm flying in and going straight to Dazaifu?
The subway takes 5 minutes from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata and 11 to Tenjin. Fukuoka Airport guide →
…it's raining?
The Kyushu National Museum next to the shrine is indoors. In Yufuin, an indoor hot-spring bath works in any weather.
…I want to stay the night in Yufuin?
Staying the night gives you the evening and the next morning in Yufuin with no train or bus to catch. Check whether the room rate includes meals.
When is a tour the better choice?
Dazaifu and Yufuin bus tour from Fukuoka
Worth it if you have only one day and want both. Check the price, the stops and the cancellation rules on the listing. Doing Dazaifu alone costs ¥1,040 by train, so for Dazaifu by itself a tour is a convenience, not a saving.

Quick questions
Does the JR Pass cover the Nishitetsu train to Dazaifu?
No. Nishitetsu is a private railway. JR Futsukaichi is a separate station from Nishitetsu Futsukaichi, so the two don't connect inside one building.
Is Dazaifu worth it if I have only one day in Fukuoka?
Yes, as a morning trip. You can be back in the city by lunch.
Can I use an IC card?
Yes on the Nishitetsu train and Fukuoka's subway. The Yufuin no Mori needs a seat reservation.
Where's the Fukuoka city guide?
Before you go
Buy the Sansaku Kippu at Tenjin for Dazaifu and go early. For Yufuin, book the train seat as soon as your date is fixed, or take the bus. Only try both in one day if someone else is driving.
