Karuizawa Day Trip from Tokyo (2026): Shinkansen, Passes and a Bus-Only Day Plan
Karuizawa is a mountain resort about an hour from Tokyo by shinkansen, with an outlet mall next to the station and forests, a waterfall and an old main street a short bus ride away. Take an Asama train: not every Hokuriku Shinkansen train stops there.
A reserved seat guarantees you a place; non-reserved cars have no guarantee. If you'll also do Nikko or Mt Fuji in three days, the JR Tokyo Wide Pass covers Karuizawa. We read JR East's timetable and the local tourist association's pages on 7 November 2026.

Which train goes to Karuizawa?
On a weekday in November 2026, 27 Asama trains a day leave Tokyo for Nagano. Asama is the train to take: Asama 635, for example, stops at Karuizawa about an hour after Tokyo. Some Hakutaka trains skip it: Hakutaka 561, for example, runs from Takasaki to Nagano without stopping. Kagayaki trains are fast expresses to Kanazawa and Tsuruga: Kagayaki 507, for example, runs from Omiya to Nagano without stopping at Karuizawa.
Should I buy single tickets or a pass?
Single tickets
Simplest for one day trip. Buy at the station machine, on JR East's site, or through an agency.

Covers the Hokuriku Shinkansen as far as Sakudaira, so Karuizawa is inside. If you add Nikko or the Fuji Excursion train on another day, add up the fares and compare them with ¥16,000.
JR Pass
Covers the Asama with no extra ticket. Not worth buying for Karuizawa alone.
Verdict: for Karuizawa alone, compare the return fare JR East shows for your date with the ¥16,000 pass. The pass is meant for trips that add Nikko or Mt Fuji in the same three days.
What can I do in a day without a car?
This is the Karuizawa Tourist Association's own day course by local bus. The bus times (9:20, 10:10, 14:04, 15:55) are theirs; the times in between are only our suggested pacing. Check the buses at the tourist information centre in Karuizawa Station (9:00–17:30).
- 9:20Kusakyu bus from Karuizawa Station to Shiraito Falls (about 23 min).
- 10:10Bus back toward Old Karuizawa (about 19 min), then walk to Shaw Memorial Chapel.
- 11:00Old Karuizawa Ginza street: shops and lunch.
- 13:30Kumoba Pond, a short walk away.
- 14:04Seibu bus to Hoshino Onsen Tombo-no-Yu (arrives 14:20).
- 14:30Harunire Terrace: cafés and shops by a stream.
- 15:55Seibu bus back to Karuizawa Station (arrives 16:10).
Is the outlet mall worth a stop?
It fits easily at the end of the day: finish the bus loop at 16:10, shop until 19:00, and take an evening Asama back. Leave shopping bags in a locker if you go out on the bus first.
What if…?
…the reserved seats are full?
Asama trains have non-reserved cars. Board at Tokyo, where the train starts, and queue at the platform marks for the non-reserved cars.
…I go in winter?
Bus timetables can change by season, and we only checked the course above. Ask at the station's tourist information centre for the buses on your day, and check the opening hours of places you want to see.
…I'd rather take a bus?
Seibu Bus runs highway buses from the Ikebukuro and Shinjuku area to Karuizawa Station. Check times and fares on Seibu Bus's site before you go.
