Mt. Fuji Climbing Reservation (2027): How to Book the Yoshida Trail, the ¥4,000 Fee and the 14:00 Gate

You want to climb Mt. Fuji and keep hearing about a reservation. On the Yoshida Trail (the Yamanashi side) there is one: you book a date online and pay ¥4,000, or pay at the 5th Station gate if places are left.

The rule that catches people out is the gate. It closes from 14:00 to 03:00, so you either start in daylight with a mountain hut booked, or you can't go up at night at all. If you want the sunrise from the summit, the hut booking is what the plan depends on.

Can't find a hut with space? Klook also sells 2-day Yoshida Trail climbing tours with a hut night. Check what's included on the listing.

Do you need a reservation to climb Mt. Fuji?

On the Yoshida Trail, effectively yes. Yamanashi Prefecture charges a trail fee of ¥4,000 and limits climbers to 4,000 a day. You can pay at the gate on the day, but only while the daily cap isn't full, so booking online is the safe choice.

The three Shizuoka trails (Fujinomiya, Subashiri, Gotemba) use a different system: an online pre-registration in Shizuoka's FUJI NAVI app, with the same ¥4,000 fee. This page covers the Yoshida Trail booking.

Starts at the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station, 2,305 m. About 6 h up, 3.5 h down.Yamanashi system, ¥4,000
Fujinomiya Trail

What does the 14:00–03:00 gate rule mean for your plan?

The gate at the Yoshida 5th Station closes from 14:00 until 03:00 the next morning. If you don't have a mountain hut booking, you must pass it between 03:00 and 14:00.

With a hut

Hut night, sunrise from the top

Pass the gate in the afternoon with a hut booking, sleep at the 7th or 8th Station, then climb to the summit for sunrise. Hut guests are exempt from the gate time and the cap.

No hut

Day climb

Pass the gate from 03:00 and come back down the same day. Roughly 6 hours up and 3.5 down, so start early. You won't see sunrise from the summit.

How to book the Yoshida Trail, step by step

Book the mountain hut first if you want one. The trail reservation doesn't include a hut, and the official site notes that registering to climb is not a hut reservation.

  1. Book a mountain hut (if you're staying overnight). Each hut takes its own bookings. Pick a hut on the Yoshida Trail at the 7th or 8th Station.
  2. Open the official Mt. Fuji climbing site and follow the link to the Yoshida Trail reservation. The site is fujisan-climb.jp. The booking page is the "Mt. Fuji Yoshida Trail Access Reservation System".
  3. Choose your date and the number of climbers, and pay ¥4,000 each. Payment is taken online when you reserve. Check the accepted payment methods on the booking screen.
  4. Keep your booking confirmation. Have it ready at the 5th Station gate, and follow what the reservation system tells you to show.
Mobile data helps on the day: your booking, bus times and weather. A Japan eSIM is the easy fix.

  5. On the day, check your gear before the gate. Staff may check your equipment before you enter the mountain area. Proper boots, rain gear, warm layers and a headlamp are on the official list.

What the official pages said on Nov 6, 2026

Checked on Nov 6, 2026

Yamanashi Prefecture's page on the Yoshida Trail listed the fee (¥4,000 per person per climb), the regulation period (July 1 to September 10), the 14:00–03:00 gate closure, the 4,000-climber daily cap and the hut-guest exemption. It said payment is taken on site or through the reservation system.

The official climbing site said "The 2026 Climbing Season has ended" and listed the 2026 opening dates: Yoshida and Subashiri from July 1, Fujinomiya and Gotemba from July 10, all until September 10.

Neither page gave dates for 2027 yet.

Common problems

My date is fully booked online.

You can also pay at the gate on the day, as long as the 4,000-climber cap hasn't been reached. There is no guarantee of a place. Otherwise, choose another date, or look at climbing tours on other dates.

Can I cancel or change my date?

The reservation system sets its own change and cancellation rules. Read them on the booking screen before you pay.

I only want to walk the lower trail from Umagaeshi.

From 2026, people who use only the Umagaeshi to 5th Station section and don't go above the 6th Station can have the fee waived. You apply on the day, at the points the prefecture lists.

The weather looks bad.

Trails can close at short notice. Emergency closures are posted on the official site under "Emergency Information". Don't start in a storm: the official gear list includes winter clothing for a reason.

Is a guided climbing tour worth it?

On your own you book three things: the ¥4,000 trail reservation, the hut, and the bus. A tour bundles some of these into one booking; compare its price with the total and check on the listing whether a guide comes with you.

Not climbing

Go to the 5th Station only

Want the mountain without the climb? The 5th Station is reachable by bus when the Fuji Subaru Line is open.

Getting to the Yoshida 5th Station

Highway buses from Busta Shinjuku run to Kawaguchiko Station in about 1 h 45 min, and direct express buses from Busta Shinjuku and local climbing buses from Kawaguchiko Station go to the 5th Station. When private cars are restricted, drivers park at Fujisan Parking near the Fujiyoshida IC and take a paid shuttle bus. Private cars are restricted on the Fuji Subaru Line in the climbing season (2026: from July 3).

Before you book

The 2027 dates and the booking start aren't out yet. When Yamanashi announces them, this page will be updated with the date of the check. Book the hut first, then the trail, and keep a weather day spare if you can.
