Shinjuku Gyoen Cherry Blossoms (2027): Do You Need a Reservation? Tickets, Hours and Rules
You want to see the cherry blossoms in Shinjuku Gyoen and have heard you might need a reservation. On most days you don't: you pay ¥500 at the gate, or tap an IC card.
On the busiest bloom weekends, though, the garden has used timed online reservations. In 2026 that was three weekend days, 10:00 to 16:00. The 2027 dates aren't announced yet; in 2026 they were published about four weeks ahead.

Do you need a reservation for Shinjuku Gyoen in cherry blossom season?
Only on a few peak days, and only for part of the day. For spring 2026, the Ministry of the Environment (which runs the garden) announced reservations on Mar 2. Here is how that worked.
So on a peak weekend you have two easy ways round it: arrive before 10:00, or come after 16:00 for the last 90 minutes.
What about 2027?
Nothing is announced yet. In 2026 the garden first posted a short notice on Feb 19 saying reservations would return on some Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in March and April, then gave the dates on Mar 2, 26 days before the first reservation day. The garden lists the Somei-yoshino season as late March to early April.

How to get in, step by step
- Check whether your day is a reservation day. Look at the garden's news page. If it isn't, skip to step 3.
- If it is, book on the official reservation page. In 2026 this was a separate page linked from the Ministry of the Environment's notice. Pick your hour, then show the e-ticket screen at the gate.
- On other days, buy at the gate or tap your IC card. Transport IC cards like Suica work at the entry gates, so you can skip the ticket window. In a trial that began on Aug 12, 2026 and is planned to run until March 2027, gate 1 at each entrance also takes a Visa contactless card or phone, for the adult ¥500 fare only.
- Or buy a web ticket ahead. The garden sells web tickets through asoview under contract. You show the QR code at the gate, and it stays valid for 6 months from purchase.A web ticket is a QR code on your phone, and you'll want maps and the garden's news page on the day. What the official pages said on Nov 7, 2026
The garden's admission page listed ¥500 / ¥250 / free, the seasonal hours, Monday closures, and Monday opening Mar 25–Apr 24 and Nov 1–15.
It also said reservations "may" be needed on peak cherry blossom weekends and holidays, without giving 2027 dates.
The Ministry of the Environment's press release of Mar 2, 2026 (updated Apr 3) gave the 2026 reservation days and hours above.
The garden's news list had no 2027 cherry blossom reservation notice yet. In 2026, a short notice on Feb 19 said reservations would return, and the dates followed on Mar 2.
A news item of Aug 6, 2026 announced the Visa contactless entry trial: from Aug 12, 2026, gate 1 at each entrance, adult fare only, planned until the end of the 2026 fiscal year.
When do the cherry trees bloom in Shinjuku Gyoen?
The garden has about 900 cherry trees of about 70 varieties, so something is in flower from February to late April. The 2026 reservation days fell in the Somei-yoshino season.
Can you drink or have a picnic?
You can sit on the lawns, but this isn't a hanami party park. Bringing alcohol in is banned.
- No alcohol.
- No drones.
- No ball games, and no bikes or roller skates.
- No tents or parasols. The one exception, small children's tents in the Children's Plaza, applies only May 7–Oct 31, so not in cherry blossom season.
- No pets (certified assistance dogs excepted), and no portable stoves.
- In busy periods such as cherry blossom season, using equipment to photograph specific people is restricted. See the garden's rules page before bringing a tripod or a photographer.
