Cherry Blossom Season in Japan: What to Book, and When (2027)

The hardest part of planning a cherry blossom trip is that the dates move each year. In 2026, full bloom came to Tokyo on March 28, three days before the long-term average.

The good news is that big blossom spots such as Ueno Park and the Meguro River are free and need no ticket. What you do need to book is the trip around them: rooms, Shinkansen seats, and a handful of timed entries and night viewings that open only weeks before.

Short on time in Tokyo? A guided cherry blossom day tour strings several spots together. The parks themselves are free or cheap on your own.

These are the Japan Meteorological Agency's average full-bloom dates (1991–2020), with 2026 for comparison. A single year can be several days off the average, as 2026 shows, so plan around the average date and keep a day or two flexible.

How do I book when the dates are not known yet?

  1. Plan around the average, not last year. In 2026 Tokyo was three days early; other years it is late. The average date is the safest middle.
  2. Split your nights. Spend the first part of the trip in Tokyo and the second in Kyoto and Osaka. On average Kyoto and Osaka reach full bloom four days after Tokyo (April 4 against March 31), so you get two chances.
  3. Keep a fallback further north. If you arrive late, Kanazawa and Sendai reach full bloom on average 8 and 13 days after Tokyo.
  4. Book the Shinkansen the moment it opens. 10:00 Japan time, one month before. Outside the all-reserved days, Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama have non-reserved cars. Hayabusa (to Sendai) and Kagayaki (to Kanazawa) are reserved-only all year.
Agencies also sell Shinkansen tickets in English. Compare their price with the JR fare before you pay.

Can I chase the blossoms north?

Yes, and it is a good insurance policy. Kanazawa normally reaches full bloom around April 8, Sendai around April 13, and Sapporo in early May. The Takayama spring festival is on April 14–15 every year. Takayama →

Tokyo → Sendai and beyond

JR EAST PASS

5 days ¥35,000, all JR East lines. It pays on long trips: JR East's own example, Narita–Tokyo–Sendai–Shin-Aomori, costs ¥52,000 in single tickets. A Tokyo–Sendai return alone is ¥23,260 (Hayabusa reserved seats, paper tickets), less than the pass.

Tokyo → Kanazawa → Kyoto

Hokuriku Arch Pass

¥35,000 for 7 days. Tokyo → Kanazawa → Kyoto one way in single tickets is under ¥25,000, so it only pays with side trips.

Long loops

Japan Rail Pass

¥50,000 for 7 days on the official site. Check your trips first.

What if…?

…the blossoms come early and are gone when I arrive?

Head north: Kanazawa and Sendai reach full bloom later on average. Late-blooming varieties such as Kanzan in Shinjuku Gyoen flower in mid to late April.

…the Shinkansen I want is full?

Try a Hikari or Kodama, which keep non-reserved cars even in peak periods, or a slightly earlier train.

…it rains at full bloom?

Rain and wind can bring the petals down early. Keep the indoor plans flexible and see the trees on the first dry morning.
