Takayama: What to Book Before You Go (2026)
Takayama is a small old town in the mountains of Gifu that fits well as one or two nights between Nagoya and Kanazawa. The town itself needs almost no booking: the old government house, the morning markets and the streets are pay-on-the-day or free.
What you should book is the transport around it. The bus to Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa has reservation-only departures, the Hida limited express is all-reserved over New Year, and the Shirakawa-go winter light-up can only be seen with an advance booking.

What do I need to book for Takayama?
Less than in Kyoto or Tokyo. Sights in town take payment at the door. The bookings that matter are seats on the way in and out.
How do I get to Takayama?
From Nagoya: limited express Hida
The usual way in. From Tokyo, take the Shinkansen to Nagoya first. The JR Pass covers the Hida, and seat reservations are free with it.
From Toyama: limited express Hida
Handy if you come from Tokyo on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, or from Kanazawa.
From Kanazawa: bus via Shirakawa-go
Nohi and Hokutetsu buses run Kanazawa ⇄ Shirakawa-go ⇄ Takayama. Takayama–Kanazawa is ¥4,200, ¥4,400 from Dec 1, 2026. Some departures are reservation-only.
From Tokyo: direct bus from Shinjuku
Cheaper and slower than the train. Book ahead; reservations open one month before. Daytime buses ¥8,000 one way to Busta Shinjuku (¥500 off if you pay by card on Highway Bus.com).
Is the Takayama-Hokuriku pass worth it?
It is built for travelling in a line through the region: Nagoya → Takayama → Shirakawa-go → Kanazawa → Kyoto or Osaka. One pass then covers the Hida, both bus legs and the train on to Kansai; add up the single fares for your route and compare with ¥19,800. If you only go Nagoya–Takayama and back, buy normal tickets.

- Check if your bus is marked R. R departures are reservation-only on Japan Bus Online. Mobile tickets are only for the non-reserved ones.
- Buy at the counter or online. ¥2,800 Takayama ⇄ Shirakawa-go (¥2,900 from Dec 1, 2026). Changes are done at the counter, not by phone.

Should I take a tour instead?
If you can stay a night, no. The bus is cheap and frequent. A tour makes sense if you only have one day from Nagoya, if the reserved buses on your date are full, or for the January light-up, which needs a booking: bus-operator and travel-agency tours are two of the five official ways in.
