Shirakawa-go (2026–27): Light-Up Reservations, the Bus from Takayama or Kanazawa, and When You Need to Book
On most days Shirakawa-go is an open village: no entry ticket, no time slot. What you do need to plan is the bus from Takayama or Kanazawa, because some departures are reservation-only and, on the current timetable, the last bus to Takayama leaves Shirakawa-go at 17:30.
The exception is the winter light-up. In 2027 it runs on four evenings in January, and visitors without an advance reservation are turned away at the gate. The lodging lottery has closed, so the ways in that remain are the reservation-only bus tours and the event parking.
We checked the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association and Nohi Bus pages on Nov 7, 2026. The details below come from those pages.

Do you need to book anything to visit Shirakawa-go?
For a normal daytime visit, the only thing to book is transport. The village is a place where people live, and you walk in freely. The Tourist Association suggests about 2–3 hours for a visit.
The bus is the bottleneck. Nohi Bus runs the Takayama–Shirakawa-go–Kanazawa/Toyama line, and the line is marked "Reservation Required Partially": some departures can only be ridden with a reservation, others are first come, first served. In peak seasons, book the reserved runs as soon as your dates are fixed.
Nohi Bus route page: Takayama ⇄ Shirakawa-go ¥2,800 until Nov 30, 2026 and ¥2,900 from Dec 1. Kanazawa ⇄ Shirakawa-go the same. Toyama ⇄ Shirakawa-go ¥2,400. Takayama ⇄ Shirakawa-go about 50 minutes, 16 round trips a day.
The same page warns that delays of two hours or more can happen, from waiting for car parking at Shirakawa-go, heavy snow or expressway closures.
How to book the bus from Takayama or Kanazawa
- Open the Nohi Bus Shirakawa-go route page and check the timetable. Departures marked R are reservation-only. Unmarked ones aren't reserved.
- Book reserved departures on Japan Bus Online. Pick the date, the stop pair (for example Takayama Nohi Bus Center → Shirakawa-go) and the number of seats, then pay online.
- For unreserved departures, buy a mobile ticket or pay at the counter. Nohi Bus sells mobile tickets only for non-reserved buses. Sales close 15 minutes before departure.
- Book the return at the same time. On the current timetable the last bus to Takayama leaves Shirakawa-go at 17:30, and changes and cancellations have to be done at the counter where you bought, not by phone. You'll want mobile data for the e-ticket and the bus status page. Coming from Tokyo or Osaka? Kanazawa is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and Takayama is reached from Nagoya by the Hida limited express on the JR Takayama Line. See Tokyo to Kanazawa by Shinkansen and the Takayama-Hokuriku pass, which covers the Takayama–Shirakawa-go–Kanazawa/Toyama buses (seat reservations required).
Shirakawa-go light-up 2027: dates and the reservation rule
The 41st light-up runs on four evenings only: Monday Jan 11 (public holiday), Sunday Jan 17, Sunday Jan 24 and Sunday Jan 31, 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30. It may be cancelled if a severe cold wave disrupts transport.
The rule is strict. Everyone needs an advance reservation, admission tickets are not sold on the day, and from 15:30 a gate at the village entrance turns away anyone without one. Your ticket is a neck holder in the colour of your date.
Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, "Overview of the 41st Shirakawa-go Light-Up Event (2027)", posted Sep 2, 2026: the four dates, 17:30–19:30, full advance reservation and admission tickets, no same-day sales, gate from 15:30, parking round 2 from Dec 1 at 13:00.
Nohi Bus light-up tour page: Course A ¥13,000, Course B (with observation deck) ¥16,000, Course C (with Shiramizu-no-yu bath) ¥14,000, all from Takayama. Sales opened in stages: Jan 11 tour from Oct 13, Jan 17 from Oct 19, Jan 24 from Oct 26, Jan 31 from Nov 2, each at 14:00.
The Nohi Bus light-up tour from Takayama
If you're staying in Takayama, this is the most direct way in. There is no regular bus back to Takayama after the light-up, so the tour bus is also your ride home.

Visiting during the day on a light-up date
You can still visit in the daytime without an event ticket, but the village is cleared before the event.
- Arriving by regular bus: you must be on a bus that reaches Shirakawa-go by 15:20. Later arrivals aren't let in.
- Day parking for cars opens 8:00, last entry 15:00, everyone out by 17:00. The association recommends arriving by 12:00.
- The walking path to the Ogimachi observation deck closes at 16:10 (open until 15:45). The deck shuttle runs uphill 9:00–15:40.
- The last regular buses leave Shirakawa-go between about 16:00 and 17:00.
- Drones are banned, and tripods are banned on the observation deck.
Missed the light-up tours: what's left?
If every bus tour is full and you won't drive in winter conditions, these are the options that remain.
Event parking, round 2
If you can rent a car with winter tyres (or hire a taxi), round 2 parking opens on Dec 1 at 13:00 JST, first come, first served.
Travel agency tours
The Tourist Association lists agency bus tours from Dec 2 at 13:00 JST. Book with the agency directly.
A daytime tour with Takayama
No night illumination, and you don't have to book the reserved bus seats yourself. Check whether lunch and the observation deck are included.
Affiliate linksIs a tour better than the public bus?
On a normal day, two one-way bus tickets from Takayama come to ¥5,800 from Dec 1. Compare that with the tour price, and check what the tour includes. If you're already in Takayama or Kanazawa and can book the reserved departures, the bus is the simpler choice.
A tour makes sense if you want Shirakawa-go and Takayama in one day from Kanazawa or Nagoya, or if the reserved buses on your date are full.
Combine it with Takayama and Kanazawa
Takayama old town
Morning markets and old merchant streets. The Takayama Festival is held there in April and October.
Kenrokuen, Kanazawa
One of Japan's best-known gardens, a short bus ride from Kanazawa Station.
Before you go
For a normal visit, book the reserved bus seats both ways and you're set. For the light-up, the dates to remember are Dec 1 (parking round 2) and Dec 2 (agency tours), both at 13:00 Japan time.
