Shirakawa-go and Takayama (2026): Buses, Booking, Passes and a Route That Works
The easy way to see both is to stay in Takayama and take the Nohi bus to Shirakawa-go for half a day: about 50 minutes each way, ¥2,800 (¥2,900 from December 1, 2026). The village itself has no entry ticket.
What you do need to book are the reservation-only bus departures, and in winter the light-up evenings, which are sold only in advance. If you're travelling Nagoya → Takayama → Shirakawa-go → Kanazawa, look at the Takayama-Hokuriku Tourist Pass.

Is the Takayama-Hokuriku pass worth it?
It pays off on the big loop: Nagoya → Takayama → Shirakawa-go → Kanazawa → Kyoto or Osaka. For only Takayama and Shirakawa-go return, single bus tickets are much cheaper. If you have a JR Pass, it covers the Hida train but not the Nohi bus. More in our Takayama-Hokuriku pass guide.

What if…?
…the reserved bus I want is full?
Try a non-reserved departure at the counter, an earlier bus, or a tour that includes the transport.

The village is at its most photogenic, but buses can run late. Don't plan a tight train connection the same evening.

Planning the rest of central Japan?
Kanazawa pairs naturally with Shirakawa-go, and Nagoya is the gateway from the south.
