Kanazawa: What to Book Before You Go (2026)
Kanazawa is a walkable castle town: Kenrokuen garden, the geisha teahouse streets, Omicho market and the 21st Century Museum. None of it needs booking weeks ahead. The only seats to plan are the Shinkansen and, in winter, the Shirakawa-go light-up.
One date matters in 2027: the 21st Century Museum plans to close for major repairs from 6 May 2027 until March 2028. We read the official pages for the prices below on 7 November 2026.

Limited express Thunderbird to Tsuruga, then the Shinkansen. Kyoto–Kanazawa ¥7,720.

Takayama → Shirakawa-go → Kanazawa by bus, or round by JR. The Takayama-Hokuriku pass (¥19,800, 5 days) covers the buses.
Is a rail pass worth it for Kanazawa?
Only on a route that crosses the country. A one-way Tokyo–Kanazawa plus Kanazawa–Kyoto is about ¥22,300, so a ¥35,000 pass needs more travel than that to pay off. Do the sum for your own trips first.
Hokuriku Arch Pass
¥35,000, 7 days. Hokuriku Shinkansen Tokyo–Tsuruga, Thunderbird, HARUKA and the Tokyo Monorail. Not the Tokaido Shinkansen.
Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass
¥19,800, 5 days, including the Takayama–Shirakawa-go–Kanazawa buses (reservations needed).
Japan Rail Pass
¥50,000 for 7 days on the official site. It covers the Kagayaki with no extra ticket.
How do you get around Kanazawa?
Kanazawa has no subway. On the Castle Town loop bus, Kanazawa Station to Kenrokuen-shita takes 18–27 minutes depending on the direction, and the sights between them are close enough to walk.
Can you visit Shirakawa-go from Kanazawa?
Yes, as a half-day or a full day. On normal days there is no entry ticket for the village; the bus is the part to book.
- Book the bus. Kanazawa ⇄ Shirakawa-go is ¥2,800, rising to ¥2,900 from 1 December 2026. Some departures are reservation-only, through Japan Bus Online. Journey times are in the Nohi Bus timetable.
