Nagoya: What to Book Before You Go (2026)
Most people stop in Nagoya for one reason: Ghibli Park. Its tickets go on sale two months ahead, online only. Everything else in the city can be planned a few days out or on the day.
Nagoya is also an easy base: the Shinkansen reaches Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, and LEGOLAND and the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park are one short train ride away. We read the official pages for the prices below on 7 November 2026.

What do you need to book before you go to Nagoya?
How do you get Ghibli Park tickets?
The park sells two day passes: Premium (adult ¥7,300 weekdays, ¥7,800 weekends) and Standard (¥3,300 / ¥3,800). The park sells online through two sellers: Klook and Lawson Ticket. Hotel bundles are sold by travel agencies such as JTB, Viator and KKday.
- Note the sale date for your month. The 10th, 14:00 Japan time, two months before. For example, January 2027 tickets open on 10 November 2026 at 14:00.
- Pick Premium or Standard. Both include a timed entry to Ghibli's Grand Warehouse. Premium also lets you into Okino Residence, Howl's Castle and The House of Witches. With Standard, those three need same-day add-on tickets (¥400–¥1,000) until 16:30.
- Buy in the names of the people going. The ticket holder must be present and may be asked for ID. Tickets can't be transferred, refunded or changed.
- Plan the trip out. Higashiyama Subway Line to Fujigaoka, then the Linimo to Ai-Chikyuhaku Kinen Koen, about 45 min in all. There's also a Meitetsu bus from Nagoya Station. Klook sells the park's own day passes in English. If your date is already sold out, look at ticket-and-hotel packages or bus tours; each listing shows its price and whether your date is open.

Shinkansen from Tokyo
Nozomi from Tokyo or Shinagawa, ¥11,300 reserved. JR Pass holders need a ¥4,180 ticket to ride the Nozomi; Hikari is covered.
Shinkansen from Kyoto
Nagoya is the first big stop east of Kyoto, so it works as a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka.
Chubu Centrair Airport
Meitetsu μSKY to Meitetsu Nagoya: every car is first class, so add a ¥450 μticket to the fare. Tap to Ride with a contactless card works at both ends.
How do you get around Nagoya?
The subway covers the castle, Sakae, Osu and Atsuta. Tap in with an IC card: manaca is the local one, and Suica, ICOCA and the other big cards work too. Trains to the theme parks are separate companies (Aonami Line, Linimo), not covered by city day tickets.
What can you do from Nagoya in a day?
LEGOLAND Japan
Aonami Line to Kinjo-futo. Online date prices from ¥4,900 adults (19+) and ¥3,700 children (3–18); add SEA LIFE Nagoya for ¥800 more. Open 10:00–17:00.

JR Takayama Line north to Takayama (the Hida limited express), bus on to Shirakawa-go (about 50 min, ¥2,800; ¥2,900 from 1 Dec 2026). The Takayama-Hokuriku pass (¥19,800, 5 days) links it all to Kanazawa and Osaka.

It's closed. The rebuilt Hommaru Palace is open 9:00–16:00 on the same castle ticket.

The park warns that cards without 3D Secure may fail. Try another card, or buy through an agency.
…I have a JR Pass?

What the official pages said on Nov 7, 2026
Ghibli Park's ticket page: sales on the 10th at 14:00 JST two months ahead (January 2027 on 10 November), online only through Lawson Ticket or Klook (hotel bundles through agencies such as JTB, Viator and KKday), no refunds, QR-code tickets, Premium ¥7,300/¥7,800 and Standard ¥3,300/¥3,800.
Nagoya Castle's fee page said admission changed on 1 October 2026 and listed ¥1,000 for adults. Its guide page listed the main keep as closed, and the Hommaru Palace page gave entry 9:00–16:00 with no fee beyond castle admission.
LEGOLAND Japan: online prices from ¥4,900 adult and ¥3,700 child, no cancellations, date change ¥500. SCMAGLEV and Railway Park: ¥1,200, closed Tuesdays.
Meitetsu: μticket ¥450 and Tap to Ride at the airport and Meitetsu Nagoya. JR Central and JR West's joint release of 16 October 2026 listed Tokyo–Nagoya Nozomi reserved at ¥11,300 (¥11,880 for tickets bought from 1 July 2027). Nagoya City listed the Donichi Eco Kippu at ¥620 and the bus and subway 1-day ticket at ¥870.
JR's timetable for one Nozomi: Tokyo 11:21, Nagoya 12:56, Kyoto 13:32. Meitetsu's chart: μSKY airport–Meitetsu Nagoya 29 minutes. Linimo: Nagoya Station to Ghibli Park about 45 minutes by Higashiyama Line and Linimo.
Going on from Nagoya?
Fix your Ghibli Park date first, since it decides the rest. Then Nagoya slots in between Tokyo and Kyoto, or as the start of a loop through Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa.
