Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (2026): Route, Buses and Is It Worth It?
You want to go Nagoya → Takayama → Shirakawa-go → Kanazawa → Kyoto or Osaka in a few days. This pass is built for exactly that loop: ¥19,800 for 5 days, including the Hida train, the Shirakawa-go buses and the Shinkansen from Kanazawa to Tsuruga. The buses and the Kanazawa–Kyoto–Osaka legs already add up to ¥14,100, so whether it pays off comes down to the Nagoya–Takayama Hida ticket: see the sums below. If you never leave the Nagoya–Takayama line, skip it.
We checked the price and rules on the official pass site (touristpass.jp, linked from JR West) on 7 November 2026, and the bus fares on Nohi Bus's official page.

Is the Takayama-Hokuriku pass worth it?
Here is the classic loop in single tickets, without the first leg. Bus fares are Nohi Bus's adult one-way fares from 1 December 2026 (¥2,800 each until 30 November). Train fares are from JR West's fare tables.
The full loop, plus one more ride
Start with the Hida from Nagoya and every extra ride on top of the ¥14,100 above (Kansai Airport at the end, a Kanazawa–Toyama trip) counts toward the pass. Compare against the Hida fare before you buy.
Takayama and back to Nagoya
If you don't go on to Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa, a Hida return is the simpler buy.

A 5-day plan with the pass
- Day 1: Nagoya → Takayama on the Hida Reserve a seat first. It's one of your 6 free reservations.
- Day 2: Takayama → Shirakawa-go → Kanazawa by bus Reserve the bus seats. All Kanazawa–Shirakawa-go buses and some Takayama–Shirakawa-go buses need a reservation, which opens a month before travel. The pass covers the fare, not a guaranteed seat.
- Day 3: Kanazawa A day for Kenrokuen and the old town. Kenrokuen guide.
- Day 4: Kanazawa → Kyoto Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tsuruga, then the Thunderbird.Keep data on for bus and train changes. A Japan eSIM is set up before you fly.Japan eSIM on Klook ↗
- Day 5: Kyoto → Osaka → Kansai Airport JR to Osaka and on to Kansai Airport. Don't take the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka: it isn't covered.
What if…?
…the Shirakawa-go bus is full?
Reserve early. If it's full, try the Toyama or Shin-Takaoka routes, which the pass also covers (Shin-Takaoka buses don't need a reservation), or a guided tour.
…I start in Tokyo?
This pass doesn't cover anything from Tokyo. Look at the Hokuriku Arch Pass instead.
…can anyone buy it?
The official page lists adult and child prices and no nationality or passport condition. If you buy through Klook or KKday, read the conditions on that product page.
Shirakawa-go day tour
A guided tour from Takayama or Kanazawa includes the bus seat.
What we checked
The official Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass page on touristpass.jp: price, 5-day validity, covered JR sections and bus routes, 6 free reservations, the Hida reserved-only period, exclusions.
JR West's Other Rail Passes page, which links to it.
Kanazawa–Kyoto and Kyoto–Osaka fares from JR West fare tables, and Takayama–Shirakawa-go–Kanazawa bus fares and reservation rules from Nohi Bus and the pass's bus notice. We did not find an official Nagoya–Takayama Hida fare, so it is left out of the sums.
Planning Takayama and Shirakawa-go?
The pass works best when you follow the loop in one direction and don't backtrack.
