Nara: What to Book (Almost Nothing) and How to Get There (2026)
Nara is the easiest day in Kansai to plan. Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha and the deer park need no reservation, and Todai-ji's official admission page mentions no online tickets at all. What matters is which train you take and what time you arrive.
Short version: Kintetsu-Nara is the closer station to the park; JR is covered by the JR Pass. We read the official pages for the prices below on 7 November 2026.
Some links on this page are affiliate links. We say when the gate or the station is just as good.
Do you need to book anything in Nara?
Not for the main sights. The Todai-ji official page lists admission at the gate and no online sale, so agency "skip the line" tickets for the Great Buddha Hall are not something you need.
Kintetsu or JR: which station is better for Nara Park?
Kintetsu-Nara Station
Nara Park is about an 8-minute walk and Todai-ji about 20 minutes. Direct trains from Kyoto and Osaka-Namba.
JR Nara Station
JR Kyoto–Nara ¥720, covered by the JR Pass. Nara Park is about a 20-minute walk, or 7 minutes by city loop bus to Kencho-mae. The loop bus also runs from both stations to the Todaiji Daibutsuden / Kasuga Taisha-mae stop, a 5-minute walk from the hall.
Is the KINTETSU RAIL PASS worth it for Nara?
The 1-day pass is ¥1,900 for foreign visitors. It covers Kintetsu between Kyoto, Osaka-Namba and Nara, plus Nara Kotsu buses to Nara Park, Nishinokyo and Horyu-ji. Limited express seats cost extra.

What should you know about the Nara deer?
- Deer crackers (shika senbei) are sold at stands in the park. Feed the deer only those.
- The deer are wild animals and a protected natural monument. Don't tease them, for example by pretending to offer a cracker.
- The park has no trash bins. Take your rubbish with you and keep it away from the deer.
Is a guided day tour to Nara worth it?
Going alone is cheaper and simple. A tour makes sense when you want Nara plus Kyoto or Uji in one day and don't want to plan the connections. Read the inclusions to see whether Todai-ji admission is in the price.

The Nara City Tourism Association gave Nara Park as about 8 minutes on foot from Kintetsu-Nara and about 20 minutes (or 7 minutes by loop bus) from JR Nara, and asked visitors to feed the deer only deer crackers and take their rubbish home.
Kintetsu's conditions of use said passes bought online or through a travel agent cannot be refunded at a Kintetsu station ticket office.
Kintetsu's English ticket pages listed the KINTETSU RAIL PASS at ¥1,900 (1 day), ¥3,700 (2 days), ¥4,900 (5 days) and ¥6,700 (5 days plus), and the Nara Kotsu bus routes included in the 1- and 2-day passes.

What if…?
…it's raining?
The Great Buddha Hall and the Todai-ji Museum are indoors. The rest is outdoor walking, so bring an umbrella.
…I arrive after 16:00?
Go straight to the Great Buddha Hall. It closes at 17:00 in winter.
…my digital pass won't load at the gate?
Show it to station staff. The pass is a digital ticket used on an internet-connected phone, so open it before you reach the gate and keep mobile data available with a Japan eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi.
Compare Japan eSIMs on Klook ↗…I want to stay the night?
You can, but you don't need to. Kyoto (about 35–50 min by Kintetsu) and Osaka-Namba (about 40 min) are close enough to sleep there instead.
Go early, skip the booking
Take an early train, walk through the park before 9:00, and buy your Todai-ji ticket at the gate. That's the whole plan. Add Uji or Fushimi Inari on the way back to Kyoto if you have time.
