Sapporo: What to Book Before You Go (2026)

Sapporo is a grid city with a simple subway, and almost nothing in it needs a ticket in advance. Even the Sapporo Snow Festival, 4–11 February 2027, is free to walk around.

What you plan is the trip out: the airport train, Otaru, and whether a JR Hokkaido area pass beats single tickets. Limited express trains in Hokkaido are all reserved. We read the official pages for the prices below on 7 November 2026.

Do you need to book anything in Sapporo?

Sapporo Snow Festival

No tickets. Free at all three sites. Odori lit until 22:00, Susukino until 23:00, Tsudome 10:00–16:00.The festival itself needs no booking; your hotel and trains do.

Limited express trains

Book a seat. All seats on Hokkaido limited expresses are reserved; get a seat ticket before you board, even with a pass.

Rapid Airport train

No booking. Cars 1–3 and 5–6 are unreserved. Car 4 is the reserved u-seat (¥1,000; ¥800 booked ticketless).

Mt. Moiwa ropeway

No booking. ¥2,100 adult round trip with the mini cable car.Closed for inspection 29 Mar–28 Apr 2027, and it stops in strong wind; check the operator's notice on the day.

Ramen, soup curry, jingisukan

Book only if the restaurant takes reservations and you want a set time.

How do you get from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo?

Walk to the airport's JR station. It is under the domestic terminal; from the international terminal, walk through the connecting building. Tap in with Suica, ICOCA, PASMO or Kitaca, or buy a ¥1,230 ticket to Sapporo.
Take the first Rapid Airport. About every 10 minutes. The Special Rapid takes 33 minutes, the Rapid 37, the Semi-Rapid 43.
Pick a car. Any car except car 4 is free seating. Car 4 needs a u-seat ticket.

What do you need to know about the Snow Festival?

Dates

4–11 February 2027 (77th), all three sites

Odori site

Odori Park, about 1.1 km. Viewable any time; lit until 22:00.

Susukino site

Ice sculptures on Ekimae-dori. Lit until 23:00 (22:00 on the last day).

Tsudome site

10:00–16:00. Shuttle bus from Sakaemachi or about 15 min on foot. Some attractions charge.

Cold

February averages −2.3 °C. Ice grips cost about ¥1,000 at the official shop, convenience stores and station kiosks.

Three subway lines (Namboku, Tozai, Toho) meet at Odori.

Is a JR Hokkaido pass worth it?

Not for Sapporo and Otaru alone: the passes don't cover the subway or streetcar, and the Otaru train is short. They pay off when you add Noboribetsu, Furano, Asahikawa or Hakodate. All JR Hokkaido passes are cheaper bought in advance than at the station.

What can you do from Sapporo in a day?

32 min by JR

Otaru

Canal, warehouses and seafood. The Blue Canal lights start on 1 November; the Snow Light Path from 6 February 2027. IC cards work as far as Otaru, not beyond.

No driving in snow

Otaru, Lake Toya or Noboribetsu bus tour

Coach tours from Sapporo combine places that are far apart by train, and you don't drive on snowy roads yourself. Check each listing for the stops and the departure point.

Late: full bloom is normally around May 6 (2026: April 24).

Winter

February averages −2.3 °C and pavements ice over. Pack ice grips or buy them on arrival.

What if…?

…festival-week hotels are full?

Look along the subway lines away from Odori, or stay in Otaru (32 min by JR) or near the airport line.

…the limited express is full?

JR Hokkaido says some limited expresses allow standing when full. Book seats as soon as you have your pass.

…I'm going on to Otaru with an IC card?

IC cards can't be used beyond Otaru. Buy a ticket for anything further.

…I want to pay for a pass with Apple Pay?

In Hokkaido, passes are sold for yen cash or credit card only.
