Otaru Day Trip from Sapporo (2026–27): Train, IC Cards and Winter Events
Otaru is the easiest day trip from Sapporo. Take any JR train bound for Otaru, fastest 32 minutes, and tap in with Suica or another IC card. You don't need to book anything.
Go in the late afternoon in winter: the canal has a blue illumination from 1 November and the Snow Light Path festival starts 6 February 2027. We checked times and dates on JR Hokkaido's and the Otaru tourism association's official pages on 6 November 2026.

How do I get from Sapporo to Otaru?
Go to JR Sapporo Station
Otaru trains leave from JR Sapporo Station, not the subway. Check the departure board for trains showing Otaru (小樽).
Tap in with your IC card
Suica, ICOCA, PASMO and Kitaca all work between Sapporo and Otaru. Or buy a paper ticket at the machine.
Ride for 32 minutes or a bit more
The fastest trip is 32 minutes. Local trains stop at every station and take longer.
Walk to the canal
From Otaru Station, walk downhill to the canal, about 8 minutes. Minami-Otaru Station, one stop before, is the closest station to the Otaru Music Box Museum at the end of Sakaimachi street (about 7 minutes on foot).
Rapid Airport trains have one reserved car (u-seat) that costs extra. You don't need it for a 30-minute ride. Details in our New Chitose Airport to Sapporo guide.
Is a JR Hokkaido pass worth it for Otaru?
Not for Otaru alone. The fare is low, and an IC card is enough. A pass pays only if you also go further in the same days.

When is the best time to visit Otaru?
Winter days are short. Arrive in the early afternoon, walk the canal and Sakaimachi street, then stay until dark for the lights. The Sapporo Snow Festival guide covers the February dates.

Do I need a tour to Otaru?
For Otaru alone, no. The train is quick and cheap and needs no booking. A tour is worth it if you want to add places that are hard to reach by train in one day, such as a snow park, Shiroi Koibito Park or the Shakotan coast.

Get off and take the next train to Otaru, or check the board at Sapporo first. Trains bound for Teine or Hoshimi don't reach Otaru.

Buy a paper ticket at your departure station. IC cards can't be used beyond Otaru.
…snow delays the trains?
Heavy snow can delay JR in winter. Check JR Hokkaido's service information before you leave.
