New Chitose Airport to Sapporo (2026): Rapid Airport Train, Reserved Seats or Bus?
The simple answer is the JR Rapid Airport train. It leaves from under the terminal, reaches Sapporo Station in as little as 33 minutes, and costs ¥1,230. Most seats need no reservation: tap an IC card and get on.
Pay ¥1,000 more for a reserved u-seat only if you want a guaranteed seat. We checked fares, seats and times on JR Hokkaido's official pages on 6 November 2026.

Train, reserved seat or bus?
Rapid Airport, non-reserved
¥1,230. Tap an IC card, take any train, sit in cars 1–3 or 5–6.
Rapid Airport, u-seat
¥1,230 + ¥1,000. A guaranteed seat in car 4 on the train you booked.
Airport bus
Goes into the city centre by road. Timetable estimates between the airport and Sapporo Station are about 65 minutes, Odori 73 and Susukino 77, and snow and traffic add more.
Rapid Airport to Otaru
Some trains run straight through Sapporo to Otaru, 73 minutes at the fastest.
All the options compared
The Sapporo Snow Festival's own guide allows about 1 hour from Sapporo by JR, and about 1 hour 10 minutes from Odori by bus, to get back to the airport. Leave more time in snow.
How do I catch the airport train?
Walk to New Chitose Airport Station
The JR station is directly connected to the airport underground: from the domestic arrivals gates you never go outside. From international arrivals, follow the JR signs through the connecting path between the international and domestic terminal buildings (it has moving walkways).
Tap in with an IC card, or buy a ticket
Suica, ICOCA, PASMO and Kitaca all work. Without one, buy a ¥1,230 ticket to Sapporo at the machine.
Board the first train that leaves
Special Rapid, Rapid and Semi-Rapid all go to Sapporo. With a non-reserved ticket you can take any airport train that day. Don't enter car 4 without a u-seat ticket.
Get off at Sapporo
If your train goes on to Otaru, check the destination before you board on the way back: trains to Teine or Hoshimi don't reach Otaru.
Is the u-seat worth it?
A non-reserved ticket is valid on any airport train that day, and trains leave the airport about every 10 minutes, so you can wait for the next one.
JR Hokkaido warns that non-reserved seats may be full. Book the u-seat if you want a guaranteed seat with your luggage.
Does my rail pass cover the airport train?
Hokkaido Rail Pass
5, 7 or 10 days on JR Hokkaido lines, including the airport train. ¥22,000 for 5 days if bought in advance. Not valid on the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
Affiliate linksSapporo area passes
4 days. The Noboribetsu pass is ¥10,000 and the Furano pass ¥11,000 bought in advance. Both include New Chitose Airport.
Just flying in and staying in Sapporo? Then a pass does not pay. Pay ¥1,230 each way and use the city subway.
What if…?
…trains stop because of snow?
JR Hokkaido posts disruption notices on its site, and the bus operators post theirs. Check both before you leave the terminal.
…I land late at night?
JR Hokkaido runs a Special Rapid Airport from the airport at 23:21 (to Teine, via Sapporo) for late flights. It leaves on time even if your flight is delayed.
…I'm going to Niseko?
Change at Otaru. IC cards can't be used beyond Otaru, so buy a ticket at your departure station.
