Kusatsu Onsen from Tokyo (2026): Day Trip or Overnight? Trains, Buses and Baths
Kusatsu is one of Japan's best-known hot spring towns, but it is not close: about three hours from Tokyo each way by limited express and bus. A day trip works if you leave early and want only the Yubatake, one bath and the yumomi show. If you can, stay one night.
Nothing in town needs booking ahead: the baths and the yumomi show sell tickets at the door. We checked the routes, prices and show times on the Kusatsu Onsen Tourism Association and bath operator pages on 7 November 2026.

How do I get to Kusatsu from Tokyo?
Limited express + JR bus
One train, one bus. Check the limited express timetable first and plan the day around it.
Shinkansen + bus via Karuizawa
Good if you want Karuizawa on the same trip.
Direct highway bus
Run by JR Bus Kanto. Seats are reserved, so book before you go.
There is also a slow route without a limited express: the Takasaki Line from Ueno to Takasaki (about 1 h 45 min), then the Agatsuma Line to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi (about 1 h 30 min). It only makes sense with a rail pass that doesn't cover limited express seats.
Fares are not listed on the tourism association's pages. Check them on JR East's site or the bus booking page before you go.
Is Kusatsu worth it as a day trip?
Honest verdict: only if Kusatsu is the one onsen town you really want to see. With about three hours of travel each way, the plan below gives you about four and a half hours in town. That is enough for the Yubatake, one big bath, the yumomi show and lunch.
Which bath should I go to, and what does it cost?
Sainokawara Rotenburo
A large open-air bath in a park, about a 12-minute walk from the Yubatake. 7:00–20:00 from April to November, 9:00–20:00 from December to March. Face towel ¥380 to buy.
Otakinoyu
Indoor and outdoor pools at different temperatures. Towel set rental ¥250.
The town has 19 public baths, and some are open to visitors free of charge. Keep them quiet and follow the posted rules.
When is the yumomi show, and do I need tickets?

How do I book the train or bus?
Pick a route and check times
The tourism association's train and bus pages link to each timetable.
Reserve the limited express or the highway bus
Book limited express seats on JR East's online reservation site or at a ticket machine. Book the Joshu Yumeguri-go on the bus company's site.
Change to the bus
At Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi, change to the JR bus for Kusatsu Onsen bus terminal (about 25 min).
Bring cash
The yumomi show takes only cash or PayPay, so carry some yen.
Rail pass holders: check on your pass's official page whether it covers the Agatsuma Line and the JR bus before you book; see our JR Tokyo Wide Pass guide.
Tour or on your own?
On your own
Train or bus plus ¥800–¥1,200 for a bath and ¥700 for the show.

…it snows?
Kusatsu is at about 1,200 m. Snow slows the buses, so leave spare time. Wear shoes with grip on the slopes around the Yubatake.
…I have a big suitcase?
Leave it in a coin locker in Tokyo or send it ahead. Buses and narrow streets make it hard to drag one around.
Coin lockers in Japan →…I have tattoos?
The official Sainokawara page says most inns and baths in Kusatsu welcome guests with tattoos that are not gang-related. A private bath at a ryokan is the safe choice.
