SHIBUYA SKY vs Tokyo Skytree vs Tokyo Tower (2026): Which Tokyo Observation Deck Is Best?
Most visitors only need one paid observation deck in Tokyo. Pick SHIBUYA SKY for sunset over the city, Skytree for the greatest height, Tokyo Tower for the classic tower and late hours. If you just want a view and no ticket, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku is free.
SHIBUYA SKY is the only one with a fixed sales window: tickets go on sale two weeks before, at midnight Japan time, and once adult tickets sell out online, the counter is sold out too. We read each official site on 6 November 2026; the prices below are from them.

Which Tokyo observation deck should I choose?
SHIBUYA SKY
An open-air rooftop on top of Shibuya Scramble Square; it can close at short notice for rain, strong wind or heat. Tickets for entry from 15:00 cost more.
Tokyo Skytree
Two decks at Floor 350 and Floor 450. The official FAQ says Mount Fuji can be seen, most often on cold, clear mornings.
Tokyo Tower
Main Deck at 150 m, Top Deck at 250 m. Open until 23:00, the latest of the paid decks here.
Tokyo City View (Roppongi Hills)
On the 52nd floor of Mori Tower. An indoor deck, so the weather doesn't close it.

Two decks at 202 m on the 45th floor in Shinjuku. Skytree is to the north-east and Mount Fuji to the west; Fuji is visible on more days from December to February.
How much does each observation deck cost?
Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo City View and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government pages were read on Nov 6, 2026. SHIBUYA SKY's prices and sales window come from its FAQ and ticket pages, checked the same day.
Tokyo City View listed a closure from Tuesday Nov 10 to Thursday Nov 12, 2026, and restricted access to the Mount Fuji side on some dates.
Which ones do I need to book in advance?
Which is best at sunset and at night?
On 6 November 2026, sunset in Tokyo was at 16:41 (as shown on the Skytree site). To watch it from a deck, pick an entry time before sunset on your date.
Which deck has the best chance of seeing Mount Fuji?
Two official sites say it plainly. The Skytree FAQ says Fuji is visible, with the best chances in the cold, clear months and early in the morning. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says its west side faces Fuji, and that December to February has the most clear days.
Free and in Shinjuku, the TMG building is the low-risk bet: if Fuji is hidden, you haven't paid anything. Note that Tokyo City View closed off the Fuji side of the deck on some dates this season.
Is the free Tokyo Metropolitan Government observatory good enough?
For many people, yes. It's 202 m up, costs nothing, and is about a 10-minute walk from the west exit of JR Shinjuku Station. You lose the outdoor feel of SHIBUYA SKY and the height of Skytree.
- South deck: 9:30–22:00, entry until 21:30. Closed the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.
- North deck: 9:30–17:30 (until 22:00 when the South deck is closed). Closed the 2nd and 4th Monday.
- If a closing day falls on a public holiday, the deck closes on the next weekday instead.
- Both decks are closed Dec 29–31, Jan 2–3 and on building inspection days.
- Take the dedicated observatory lift from the 1st floor of the No. 1 Building. On weekends and holidays, the 2nd-floor entrance is closed.
- No tripods.
Official site or Klook: where should I buy?
Start with the official sites: each one has its online price on the page, and online is cheaper than the counter at SHIBUYA SKY, Skytree, Tokyo Tower's Top Deck and City View. Klook is worth checking if it's cheaper on your date or you're buying several sights in one go.
